Off the ressenti est interviewer vos favoris personnes dans l'industrie de poker pour en savoir plus sur leur vie — vous l'avez — au large le feutre. Nous nous sommes assis récemment avec Phil Collins pour parler un peu poker, prop de Paris et cornhole.

Comment avez-vous commencé à jouer au poker ?

J'ai commencé à jouer ma première année au Collège. Nous sommes allés vers le bas, à Hilton Head, lors d'un voyage de la semaine de relâche et nous étions traîner et il y a six ou sept gars et nous avons décidé de commencer à jouer au Texas Hold. Pas très bon nombre d'entre nous avaient joué avant. Nous avons joué pour pennies, nickels et dimes. Nous avons joué beaucoup quand nous got back, et j'ai été celui qui a vraiment plaisir et gardé à jouer.

Quelle est la prochaine sur votre calendrier de poker ?

Je vais jouer le diamant de cinq Bellagio. Je pourrais jouer un couple des événements préliminaires, puis après que je vais la tête à l'APC en janvier.

Où est votre arrêt tournoi préféré que vous avez joué à ?

Je me réjouis de la série mondiale chaque année la plupart de toute compétition. Je suis allé l'Europe pour quelques mois à quelques arrêts de jouer et de Barcelone est une étape sympa. C'est une ville vraiment cool et le casino est à droite sur l'eau, relié à l'hôtel. C'est un casino vraiment agréable avec un tas d'hôtels et de restaurants autour. J'ai bien aimé cette escale beaucoup.

Quel est votre endroit préféré pour jouer à Vegas ?

Bellagio est probablement mon endroit préféré pour jouer. Le WPT que j'ai joué il y a toujours eu grands événements où nous asseoir dans le salon Fontana. C'est une belle salle à jouer au poker.

Félicitations pour votre incroyable exécutés dans le Main Event des WSOP. Avez-vous quelque chose amusante pour célébrer ?

Je ne savais vraiment quoi faire parce que je busted et je comptais sur l'et puis tout à coup j'ai 50 de mes amis y prêtes à faire quelque chose amusante. Environ 30 d'entre nous se rend à la calandre All-American dans le droit de Rio après je s'était effondré et puis nous avons fini par sortir quelques nuits sur le strip, puisque j'ai eu beaucoup d'amis et de famille dans la ville.

Avez-vous fait aucun achat en gros de votre score big ?

Je suis très très bonne à cornhole. Me considérer comme à l'élite. Le concours les plus difficiles ici est Dan o ' Brien. Il était le meilleur, mais j'ai pratiqué beaucoup et je pense que j'ai dépassé lui pour no 1 joueur a classé.

Avez-vous été impliqué dans tout Paris prop ridicule ?

J'ai été témoin de quelques-uns. Vous connaissez le défi gallon ? J'ai convaincu Allen Bari à me faire un gallon de moitié en une demi-heure. En fait, il m'a donné de 35 minutes, et je lui écrasée en ce que.

USC évolua à Vegas ce week-end, vous ont pu se rendre aux Jeux ?

Oui. Je suis allé le premier jeu de la première journée. Caroline n'était pas fait trop chaud et durant la mi-temps j'aventurés hors du Casino avec mon bon ami Brent Hanks et nous nous sommes assis sur certaines machines de vidéo poker. Il a foré une machine de Keno pour une bonne quantité et je foré une machine à sous dollar pour 4 000 $, lorsque j'ai frappé une Quinte Royale.

Je dois demander, quel est votre chanson préférée de Phil Collins ?

J'aime vraiment le remix avec harmonie et Bone Thugs, Take Me Home. C'est plus d'une chanson de Bone Thugs, mais puisqu'il lui a en elle c'est mon préféré.

Quels sont vos passe-temps loin de la table ?

Je regarde beaucoup de sports et de films. J'aime de golf et de jouer au basket-ball. J'essaie aussi ramasser de planche à neige.

Vous étiez capable de jouer beaucoup de tournois à l'étranger. Quelle stop tournoi avait la meilleure nourriture ?

C'est difficile. Je suppose que je vais dire Paris parce que c'est une ville vraiment grosse, et il a tellement des différentes influences, que vous pouvez obtenir presque tout ce que vous voulez. Maintenant, je sais pourquoi Paris est si populaire.

Comment avez-vous le nom de Phildo ?

Ma première année de bon ami du Collège, son nom fut Gerardo et du Venezuela. J'ai appelé mon ami GEORGESLE et j'ai demandé à mon ami du Venezuela comment diriez-vous que Phil au Venezuela. Il serait Phildo ? Qui est resté pour le reste du Collège afin que chaque fois que je ferais les noms de mon écran j'utiliserais USCphildo.

Si vous n'étiez pas jouer au poker ce que vous feriez ?

Je serais un avocat. J'ai été accepté à l'école de droit et c'est ce que je comptais sur faisant professionnellement avant passée et a décidé de jouer au poker.

In January 2005, John Stolzmann, a 23-year-old student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, traveled to Tunica, Mississippi, with his father to play a little poker. Both father and son were well-versed in the game, but it was the latter who made a deep run in the World Poker Tour’s Sixth Annual Jack Binion World Poker Open.

Slowly but surely, the younger Stolzmann navigated a field of 512 entries and found himself at the televised final table. Unfortunately for him, he was joined there by some of poker’s top professionals including Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, Scotty Nguyen, Daniel Negreanu, and Chau Giang. It was a tough final table, to say the least, but Stolzmann managed to do the improbable and defeated his experienced foes, becoming a WPT champion in the process and capturing the $1,491,444 first-place prize.

After his big score, Stolzmann dropped out of school and gave up the cold Wisconsin winters for the sunny shores of California. He began playing tournaments full time, but discovering success on the tournament trail eluded him outside of his WPT score. In fact, his biggest cash outside of that payday was a seventh-place finish in a $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em Event at the 2005 Five-Star World Poker Classic for $14,275.

Over the past six years, Stolzmann’s poker journey has taken many turns. PokerNews recently sat down with the now 30-year-old to find out what he’s been up to in the past seven years.

What have you been up to since your WPT win?

The first thing I did was drop out of school because I wanted to move out to California to focus on poker. My girlfriend lived out there, who was also a professional poker player, so it made sense for me at the time. I spent the next year out in California playing tournaments and cash games. I didn’t really parlay the [WPT] tournament, the tournament stuff didn’t go well. I was winning in cash games, but didn’t really have any cashes in tournaments. After a year, I basically stopped playing in those except for the Main Events.

I had promised my mom I would go back to school and finish my degree at Wisconsin, so my girlfriend and I broke up. She was playing at Commerce all the time, and I really didn’t want to butt heads with her there, so I moved back to Wisconsin. I finished my degree, which only took two semesters, and stayed out there playing poker for about three years, and then I decided it was about time to come back out to California. I started playing for a living here in cash games, and then about a year and a half ago I got a job as a prop, a house player, at Hawaiian Gardens, and that’s what I’ve been doing.

For those who may not know, what does being a prop player entail?

Now I get paid a pretty sick wage, plus health benefits, to play like $30-$60 limit and $5-$10 no limit at the Gardens. I’m playing with my own money, but I have to work a set schedule. They just pay me hourly and I keep what I win. If I lose, I lose [my money]. Then I get my wage on top of that plus my benefits.

The only job aspect to it is I have to get up when the game fills up. So sometimes I’m just there making my hourly wage and not in a game, but I’m really happy doing it because there’s so much less stress knowing that you’ll never have a losing month because your wage more than covers any terrible month that you’ll have. The games are really good there, and I’ve been doing well. It’s like my dream job because it makes it viable long term.

You’ve mentioned that you used to play online quite a bit. Did Black Friday have a negative effect on you?

Yeah, I lost a little money on Black Friday. Not an incredible amount. I thought I was in the clear; I actually had a friend who lives out of the country who I was able to transfer to, within like an hour after when the transfers were still legal but cashing out wasn’t. So I transferred to my friend, but he still couldn’t cash it out. I had my prop job and stuff, but I’d play Rush Poker now and then. I’d play a little bit of limit poker on PokerStars, where at least I got my money back.

How did you come to play the WPT Sixth Annual Jack Binion World Poker Open?

I didn’t even want to go, really. I had school and had just missed for a poker tournament down in Costa Rica, but my dad was qualified for Tunica; he had won an online WPT vacation sit-and-go, so he wanted me to go and wanted to invest in me. I had been playing professionally in the summers, and when I first started out and didn’t have any money he bankrolled me for a piece of my winnings.

The deal he gave me [for the WPT] was just so awesome that I said all right. He bought me into a $3,000 event that I busted out of, and then a $1,000 satellite into the Main Event. I won then and then won Tunica.

That final table boasted quite the lineup. Was that kind of intimidating?

I guess a little bit at that time. I just basically played accordingly. At that time, I had barely played any no-limit hold’em at all; I was a limit hold’em player. I had played tournament here and there online, so I knew I was inexperienced. Looking back, I don’t think I played that well. I did play well given the circumstances, that being I had to take big chances and try to play for big pots. I didn’t want to play small ball with these guys and try to become involved in a lot of pots and try to outplay people, because I knew that wasn’t going to happen.

So, preflop, I would put huge percentages of my stack in so there was no real thinking postflop. In a sense I wasn’t intimidated because my strategy kind of took their game away. It made me an underdog, but less of an underdog that I would have been had I not done that.

You took home nearly $1.5 million. Did you make any big purchases with that money?

Mostly I just used it as a poker bankroll, but I did buy a house out in California, which ended up being a terrible decision, looking back. I took a loss on it. I also bought a car, but not right away because my girlfriend at the time had two awesome cars, so I’d just use one of those. When we broke up, I bought an Audi. Nothing too splurgy. I took a lot of vacations.

You also played in a WPT Father and Sons Tournament at the 2006 World Poker Finals. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

That was a really nice thing that the WPT did. That was just a little side event after Foxwoods. It was an invite-only thing. They invited six teams* of fathers and sons who were important to the WPT to play in a little event. What ended up happening, it was like a tag-team event, so at any time my dad could play or I could play, likewise for everyone else.

When one father and son team wins, then the father and son would play heads up for an entry into the $25,000 World Championship. It was just a freeroll. My dad got all-in with aces against Todd Brunson’s kings, and Brunson hit a king [laughs]. That’s how we got knocked out in fifth.

Tobey Maguire Settles Hollywood Poker Lawsuit

Earlier this year, Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire was one of 22 people sued for their winnings in a high-stakes Hollywood poker game organized by a criminal Beverly Hills hedge fund manager. On Nov. 22, Maguire reportedly agreed to an $80,000 settlement with a bankruptcy trustee who is trying to recoup more than $30 million in lost funds, the Associated Press reported on Monday.

Maguire was being sued for more than $300,000 for winnings he earned from the invitation-only games organized by businessman Bradley Ruderman, who is serving a 10-year prison sentence for running a Ponzi scheme to pay off debts. Ruderman operated a wire-fraud and investment-adviser fraud scheme that lost investors $25 million, and then allegedly lost another $5.2 million in the high-stakes cash games trying to win the money back.

According to the Associated Press, 14 of the 22 people sued have agreed to settlements in their cases. Former High Stakes Poker host Gabe Kaplan also agreed to pay $26,900 after he was sued to try to recoup nearly $63,000 in winnings, according to the AP report. All of the money recouped will be used to repay the victims of Ruderman's Ponzi scheme.

Barney Frank To Step Down

On Monday, Barney Frank (D-Mass.) announced that he will not return to Congress for a 17th term in 2012. Frank, one of the major political advocates for the legalization of online poker, cited changes to the new congressional map as a major factor in his decision to step down.

"I was planning to run again, and then the congressional redistricting came," Frank, 71, said at a press conference in his hometown of Newton, Mass.

During his time with the House Financial Services Committee, Frank has introduced several bills pushing for online poker legislation in the U.S. In his most recent venture, Frank served as a sponsor for Congressman John Campbell's Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act (H.R.1174). The proposed bill was referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security in June, but no action has been taken since.

Frank also recently testified on behalf of Internet poker at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing. He has arguably been the biggest driving force behind the legalization of online poker since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was passed in 2006.

Mohamed Ali Houssam Wins WPT Marrakech

Mohamed Ali Houssam bested a field of 246 players to win the €3,000 World Poker Tour event in Marrakech over the weekend. Houssam, playing in his home country of Morocco, entered the final day as the chip leader and emerged as the champion to collect $267,011 and his first WPT title.

The nine-handed final was stacked with well-known pros, including Team PokerStars Pros Jonathan Duhamel, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Arnaud Mattern. Grospellier (eighth place) and Duhamel (seventh place) hit the rail early, and Mattern was eliminated in fourth place when his ace-eight couldn't improve against the pocket sevens of Maksim Martinov.

Martinov was sent packing in third place after taking a brutal beat to Toufik Ourini, setting up a heads-up match between Houssam and Ourini for the title. The two players began with nearly identical stacks, but Houssam secured the win by flopping a set of eights against Toufik's top pair on the final hand of the tournament. With the victory, Houssam also received a $25,000 seat into the WPT World Championship at Bellagio in May.

Rush Poker Not Patentable?

While it will likely be a while before players can fire up some Rush Poker tables at Full Tilt Poker, a new online poker room will soon be launching its own version of the popular fast-paced variant. The InstaDeal Poker Network is set to introduce a similar form of Rush Poker after drawing on legal advice that Full Tilt Poker did not meet the necessary requirements to patent the concept.

Full Tilt Poker applied for a patent on Rush Poker in several global markets back in 2007, but InstaDeal Chairman Per Hildebrand recently told eGamingReview that Rush Poker “was never patentable” as Full Tilt only met one of the three criteria required to be granted a patent. Hildebrand claims that the feedback he received from his attorneys gave him enough security to move forward with his own project.

“From that time on we were confident they were never going to get a patent for it," Hildebrand told eGamingReview.

Hildebrand, the former chief executive of the Entraction Network, says he's surprised that no other online poker room beat him to the punch. “PokerStars has suggested launching something similar and no one really knows what they’re up to but we gather that they’re looking into the legals. In all honesty I’m a little surprised that they haven’t launched anything yet,” Hildebrand added.

Kahnawake Gaming Commission Suspends 24Poker License

Online poker room 24Poker had all of its games blocked late last week after its license was suspended by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. The Microgaming network, which provides the software for 24Poker, released the following statement about the decision:

"Microgaming today announced that all game play on the 24Poker website has been blocked due to the Kahnawake Gaming Commission suspending 24Poker’s gaming license. Both Microgaming and the Kahnawake Gaming Commission have tried without success to contact the 24 Poker Management Team. Further announcements will be made as additional information becomes available.”

Players began having cash-out problems at 24Poker beginning in September and weren't receiving any responses to e-mails regarding the issues. The site, which is owned by BPRServices Limited, had been licensed by the KGC since 2004. Its license was not due to expire until January 2012.

PokerStars Announces $10K High Roller

PokerStars has added another event to celebrate its upcoming 10th anniversary. The site has announced a $10,300 High Roller tournament that will run alongside the first-ever $10 Million Sunday Million, making for what will be one of the most exciting Sunday grinds online poker has ever seen.

The High Roller event will feature a $500,000 guarantee and gets underway at 1530 ET (2230 GMT) on Sunday, Dec. 18. Two players are already registered -- Toby "810ofclubs" Lewis and Team PokerStars Online Pro Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen -- and dozens more will likely sign up before registration closes.
