Cinq pensées : Sainte Macao

Phil Ivey

"I love you guys ! THANK YOU!"il tweeted.

5. Joyeux anniversaire PokerStars

PokerStars a célébré son 10e anniversaire à Macao du rendez-vous, et Lynn Gilmartin était là pour check it out.

Joe Barton

« Ils probablement Couldn't ont soigné moins qui était up there faisant le shuffle up and deal.

Macau

For a little over a year, the poker world has been captivated by a secretive high-stakes cash game in Macau involving wealthy Chinese businessmen and some of poker’s top professionals. The on-again, off-again no-limit Texas hold’em cash game held at StarWorld’s Poker King Club boasts some healthy blinds at HKD$10,000/HKD$20,000 ($1,300/$2,600).

Over the weekend, Macau was a hotbed of poker action, not only with the aforementioned cash game in full effect, but also with the PokerStars.net Asian Pacific Poker Tour Main Event, which was eventually won by Team Online Pro Randy “nanonoko” Lew. With both tournament and cash-game action to be had, it was no surprise to see a bevy of pros make their way to Macau, including Phil Ivey, who had disappeared from the poker landscape since Black Friday.

On Wednesday, Nov. 23, rumors had it that Ivey was in Macau not only to play in the monster cash game, but to also play the APPT Macau Main Event. The latter rumors was highly scrutinized, but Ivey silenced the skeptics when he showed up in Level 2 of Day 1A. This marked the first major tournament Ivey had played since the World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star Championship last March. Needless to say, the abandonment of a seven-month long self-exile created waves in the poker world.

The StarWorld’s Poker King Club courtesy of Poker Portal Asia The StarWorld’s Poker King Club courtesy of Poker Portal Asia

Even though Ivey didn't make it past Day 2 in the tournament, his exit opened the door for his return to the big game along with notables Guy Laliberte, Peter “GARFIELD25? Chan, Tom "durrrr" Dwan, Johnny Chan, Sam Trickett, James Bord, Andrew "good2cu" Robl, and Poker King Club regular, Winfred Yu, among others.

Ivey’s appearance was making headlines, but Robl managed to capture the poker world’s attention with a single tweet last Thursday:

Andrew_Robl Andrew Robl Been gambling big in Maccau. Won 2 million USD straight and was very thankful. Now lost 2 million straight. Thankful for other things :). November 24 2011

Those in the U.S. were busy celebrating Thanksgiving while Robl was half a world away experiencing life-changing swings. The particulars of Robl’s massive rise and fall are unknown, though many speculate he mislabeled the win as USD instead of HKD ($2 million HKD = approximately $190,000 USD). PokerNews reached out to Robl for comment, but received no response as of this publication.

Given the large stakes, and the fact that no cameras are allowed in casinos in Macau, details of the game have been guarded. Aside from Robl’s tweet, a few particulars have slipped through and are largely discussed on the popular poker forum TwoPlusTwo.

It was on TwoPlusTwo that Frank "webjoker" Op de Woerd, who was at the StarWorld Casino, posted the following:

"Guy Laliberté was there with a hot girl on his side and I saw Johnny Chan sitting. They were just setting up the table but one of the guys from the casino brought in a wooden box with more plaques of HKD$500,000 and HKD$100,000 than I've ever seen before in one place."

He went on to say that Patrik Antonius wasn’t allowed in the game: "I left after that but heard from my friend who was playing a HKD$1,000 sit-n-go that Antonius tried to get in but wasn't allowed. He told me that he was watching a hand where a good American player (he recognized him but didn't knew his name) got all-in on the flop for a HKD$3 million pot with ace-king versus jack-ten on three-eight-nine. Two bricks later he scooped the pot and the Chinese businessman reloaded by getting some plaques from his side-table where he had a total of HKD$7,000,000 laying around. Also heard, from a very reputable guy, that foreigners have to pay back 20 percent of their winnings in some cases to the casino."

The reasons for Antonius’ exclusion are not known, though many have speculated in the forums. The most plausible theory is that Antonius is considered too much of a nit, the type of player Macau regulars like to avoid, which would confirm what Rui “PepperoniF” Cao said back in June regarding the high-stakes games in Macau. In his blog on Limpers, Cao previously claimed the following:

“You’re probably wondering who the players are in the game, most regs are Chinese, some are wealthy Chinese. There are also some known players like Durrrr and Ivey . . . Patrik Antonius was virtually banished from the party because he played a little too tight and that he had gained too much [in] props.”

Some bystanders risk breaking the rules to snap a quick picture. Bryan Wang, who goes by @camparimojito on Twitter, tweeted the photo on the left of Johnny Chan at the Poker King Club.

Speaking of Chan, on Nov. 27, Poker Portal Asia reported that the two-time World Series of Poker Main Event champ was the big winner in the game. Fresh off his 60th-place finish in the APPT Main Event, for which he earned HKD $46,700, the “Orient Express” successfully shifted his momentum from the tournament realm to the mother of all ring games.

Chan’s success, as well as a few other rumors, were confirmed by "MacauPro," a regular poster on TwoPlusTwo familiar with the Macau game:

"Confirmed that PA [Patrik Antonius] was not allowed into the game, James Bord (who was playing) tried to get him in but Guy Laliberte insisted "no way." PA played 5k/10k [$640/$1,280 U.S.] PLO instead with [Andrew "good2cu"] Robl and a few others. So far, Johnny Chan is the big winner in the games, up over 11 million Hong Kong Dollars [or about $1.4 million U.S.)."

Rumors have also circulated that Dwan, who purportedly won $6.5 million in a heads-up game in Macau this time last year, is down HKD$20 million, or about $2.6 million, in the past couple of weeks. According to Peter “GARFIELD25” Chan, a participant in the Macau big game, Dwan had amassed some substantial losses. In the chat box of a game on PokerStars, Chan told Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond the following:

Unfortunately, Dwan may not have a chance to recoup his losses. According to Poker Portal Asia, a reliable source claims that Dwan had to leave Macau and return to the U.S. after losing his passport. If that proves true, there’s little doubt he’ll return just as soon as he gets a new one.

Even without “durrrr,” the big game in Macau shows no sign of slowing down. As always, PokerNews will bring you any and all updates as they become available.

Martin Staszko

PokerStars dominated the headlines on Tuesday. In addition to its ongoing reign over the online traffic rankings, PokerStars attached its brand to a German football stadium, and rumors circled that a 2011 November Niner was added to Team PokerStars Pro. Read about those stories and more in this edition of the Nightly Turbo.

In Case You Missed It

A huge cash game in Macau drew some of the biggest names in poker last week. Chad Holloway breaks down the action from the StarWorld’s Poker King Club.

U.S. Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) has been one of the major advocates of online poker on Capitol Hill. He discussed Internet poker legislation and building on previously introduced bills in an exclusive interview with PokerNews.

The PokerNews Podcast hit the Midwest this week. The crew caught up with Wisconsin native Eric Baldwin to talk about his hometown and his recent win at the Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza.

Phil Ivey made a triumphant return to poker last week. Rich Ryan discusses Ivey's comeback and the big game in Macau in his latest Five Thoughts piece.

Martin Staszko Joining Team PokerStars?

2011 World Series of Poker Main Event runner-up Martin Staszko is rumored to be the newest member of Team PokerStars Pro, multiple outlets reported on Tuesday.

Although Staszko's profile page hasn't been added to the PokerStars website and he isn't listed as a Team Pro in the PokerStars lobby, the 35-year-old has supposedly signed on to become the second player from the Czech Republic to represent the site (Martin Hruby was the first).

We reached out to PokerStars for comment on Tuesday, but representatives could not confirm that a deal had been finalized.

Staszko was an unknown before a remarkable run in the WSOP Main Event saw him earn more than $5.4 million. He lost the heads-up duel to Pius Heinz, who signed a sponsorship deal with PokerStars earlier this month.

Staszko plays on PokerStars under the moniker "filfedra" and has enjoyed an incredible amount of success on the site. In May, he took down a Spring Championship of Online Poker event for $91,500, and also had a fourth place finished in a World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) event in September for more than $73,000.

World's Largest Poker Tournament in Macau?

Plans for a proposed $100 million poker tournament are in the works in Asia, making for what would be the largest poker tournament ever held.

American businessman William Murray told GamingToday that five Chinese companies have been working to create the Macau Pro Am Open for spring 2013. The goal is to generate a prize pool of between $65 million and $100 million with a first-place prize as high as $25 million.

"The objective is to have 500 participants, including a third come from the Far East, a third from the United States and a third elsewhere," Murray told GamingToday. "With a field as small for a total as big, we can deduce that the entry fees will be substantial unless the sponsors, whose names are not revealed, only support a portion of the prize pool."

Our calculator watch tells us the buy-in would be $200,000 for the Main Event, according to Murray's projections. To compare, this year's $100,000 Super High Roller event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure drew 38 players, with Eugene Katchalov earning $1.5 million for first place. Murray's goal of 500 players seems lofty, but the high-stakes action has been booming in Macau of late.

PokerStars is the latest online poker room to enter the German sports sponsorship market. The poker site recently won the naming rights to Stadion an der Löhmuhle, an 18,000 capacity stadium in Lübeck, Germany. As of Nov. 23, the stadium is called PokerStars.de — Stadion an der Lohmühle.

Lübeck's multi-use stadium is mostly used for football matches and is home to fourth-division soccer club VfB Lübeck. The three-year deal with PokerStars is reportedly worth €120,000 per season with an option for 2016.

The football team is located within the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, which is in the process of opening its doors to online gambling operators. In September, the state became the first to legalize and regulate online poker, and operators will be able to apply for online betting licenses in March 2012. PokerStars has been a huge supporter of Schleswig-Holstein's movement toward legalization of online gaming in Germany.

2012 Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza Schedule

The Venetian poker room has released its schedule for the 2012 Deep Stack Extravaganza I. The 44-event series kicks off on Jan. 26 and concludes with a three-day $2,500 Main Event from Feb. 19 through Feb. 21.

In addition to some new events and buy-ins, the biggest change to the first DSE of 2012 will be the location. The series moves to the Palazzo Hotel and Casino because the Venetian is undergoing a casino remodel.

Last week, poker pro Scott Clements won the 2011 Deep Stack Extravaganza IV Main Event for $145,775. The event drew 265 entries to create a prize pool of more than $600,000.

The complete 2012 Deep Stack Extravaganza I schedule can be found at the Venetian's website.

Online Poker Traffic Update

The online poker traffic numbers from last week have been released. PokerScout.com reported a worldwide increase of 1 percent, mostly from a significant rise at PokerStars.

PokerStars held the No. 1 spot in the rankings and saw its traffic climb by 4 percent from the previous week. The site is celebrating its 10th anniversary and is rolling out several promotions for customers to cash in on. The iPoker Network landed at No. 2 for the second week despite a 1 percent decline in traffic, and PartyPoker came in third after a 2 percent drop. 888poker and the OnGame Network rounded out the top five, respectively.

Bodog continued its ascent up the rankings by moving up one spot to No. 11 this week. The growing poker room was ranked 15th three weeks ago and is quickly closing in on the top 10.

As for year-over-year numbers, PokerScout's ACES indicator reports that online poker traffic (with the exception of Italy) has decreased by 28 percent over the past year. Aside from the obvious traffic extinction at Full Tilt Poker and the CEREUS Network, the Entraction Network (down 43%) and the International Poker Network (down 39%) have also seen significant drops since November 2010. The biggest climbers in the past year are 888poker (up 74%), the Merge Gaming Network (up 67%) and Bodog (up 64%).

Adrienne "talonchick" Rowsome Trains for P-C-Eh

Team PokerStars Online Pro Adrienne "talonchick" Rowsome has never been to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas but be making an appearance in the upcoming series in January to play the final table of the Canada Cup. The Edmonton, Alberta, native isn't familiar with hot weather and sandy beaches, so she's been preparing for the PCA by doing some "climate training" in Florida. Have a look:

You can also get a look at Rowsome's life as an occupational therapist and part-time poker pro in a short documentary released by PokerStars earlier this month.

November 28 2011, Mickey Doft

Adrian Marin

Before the festivities for PokerStars' 10th Anniversary begin in December, the final Sunday of November had to get out of the way. Brazil's Robert "Robert Chiro" Chiró won the Sunday Million outright for more than $200,000, and Romania's Adrian "Adrian900123" Marin earned top honors in the Sunday Warm-Up for about $90,000. Also earning a victory on Sunday was Michiel "utreg" Brummelhuis of the Netherlands.

When the Sunday Million final table began, chip leader "Phantomes124" held nearly double the amount Robert "Robert Chiro" Chiró in second place. Riding the big stack, "Phantomes124" made it to three-handed play, but busted when his {A-Clubs}{7-Hearts} couldn't catch up to Chiró's {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} when the board ran out {K-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Spades}{8-Spades}.

Starting heads-up play, Chiró held about a 1.3:1 chip lead and had extended it by the time all the chips made it to the middle. On the final hand, with the blinds and antes at the 300K/600K/60K level, Chiró (43.6m) opened to 1.26 million on the button. Holding {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, "chrisf44" (22.5m) three-bet to 3 million. Chiró came back over the top with a four-bet to about 7.6 million, only to see his opponent ship it in. With {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, Chiró called and held up through the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{K-Hearts} board to notch the victory.

Notable Finishes: Jay "shaihulud" Kinkade (16th - $3,701.04), Hugh "Jackovich" Cohen (20th - $3,093.01), Matthias "mattidm" De Meulder (42nd - $2,498.20)

Entering the final table of the Sunday Warm-Up, Vincent "Vingtcent" van der Fluit was chip leader, and Adrian "Adrian900123" Marin was not far behind. It was far from smooth sailing for van der Fluit, though, and with four players remaining, he saw a sizable chip lead turn into roughly a ten-big-blind stack.

He recovered to make it to three-handed play where a deal was agreed upon. After Marin eliminated "vincelis" in third place, he commanded a healthy 5.3:1 chip lead over his opponent. It didn't take long for it to end as Marin shoved {A-Hearts}{2-Clubs} and was met with an all-in call from van der Fluit who tabled {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. A {9-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs} board brought no help to van der Fluit, securing the victory for Marin.

On hiatus last week because of the Red Spade Open, the Bigger $55 returned this week and saw English poker star Toby "810ofclubs" Lewis finish in seventh place. Winning the tournament outright was "inheritance" for just more than $45,000.

On the heels of Mike "Timex" McDonald winning the Bigger $109 last week, another notable took the title this week. Following a four-handed deal, Michiel "utreg" Brummelhuis outlasted Sunday Warm-Up winner Adrian "Adrian900123" Marin to take it down.

Notable Finishes: Tom “7tHEcROw7” MacDonald (17th - $2,185.30)

Once again, the Sunday Storm saw huge numbers as the $200,000 guarantee was smashed. A six-handed deal went down, resulting with "inorogul_13" earning the "W" and the top prize of $26,208.16.

*denotes six-handed deal

The Sunday Kickoff got things started this weekend with 30 more entrants than last week. Following a heads-up deal, "777xyz777" earned bragging rights for the win, as well as $24,124.02.
