London

The next stop on the PokerStars European Poker Tour takes us to one of the capitals of the world—London. Any European traveler has most likely crossed paths with London at least once in their lives. I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few times, and when I do, the inner-child in me still gets excited walking the streets I grew so familiar with from my days playing Monopoly. With a city so big, offering something for any taste or lifestyle, it would be impossible to cover everything in one article. So the following are just some of my personal suggestions and favorite spots in this great big, historic city.

The Basics

Weather: average 60-65°F (15-17°C)International Dialing Code: +44Currency: GBP £1 = USD $1.6Language: EnglishElectricity Voltage: 240V with the bulkiest plug in your travel adapter - the one with two flat blades and one flat grounding blade

Getting There and Around

Beware: Heathrow Airport is the third busiest airport in the world, so give yourself plenty of time to get through it. The most timely and cost-efficient way to get into, and around, town is using The Tube, a train from each of the airport terminals that turns into an underground world of tracks all over the city, working as the main mode of transport for all residents and tourists in London. The Heathrow Express will get you from the airport to Paddington underground station in 15 minutes. Conveniently for us, Paddington is the area we will be based for the PokerStars European Poker Tour, just across from Edgeware Road underground station. Although don't be fooled by feeling the need to get to Edgeware Road on the Picadilly (navy) and District (green) lines from Heathrow, otherwise you'll be on the train for an hour. Heathrow Express it is!

Find Your Base

Paddington is the perfect area to ground yourself while in town for the PokerStars European Poker Tour, tucked between both Hyde and Regent’s Parks. The poker action will take place at the Hilton London Metropole, as mentioned earlier, directly across from the Edgeware Road underground station.

Once you've arrived, you can be sure that most places you need to go to will be serviced nearby with an underground station. When you first look at a map of The Tube it can be daunting, but it really is quite simple to navigate through once you are there, and thanks to that, the major sights of London are always just minutes away.

Before you hit the tourist map, be sure to check out what Paddington and its surrounding area has to offer. Hyde and Regent’s Parks are like oases of calm in the middle of the city, London's version of New York's Central Park. The perfectly manicured lawns provide the ultimate escape from the bustling city, especially with a "pint and plate" of fish 'n chips and Magner's in hand. One of the most popular places to eat in the area is called Core on South Wharf Road. It's a quick walk from the Hilton London Metropole where you can enjoy a cozy breakfast and lunch or dinner full of fresh, local and organic produce at a reasonable price.

Ben is Big

Countless tour operators run in London, including the infamous double-decker buses, as well as walking tours, show you all that London Town has to offer, but when I first visited London, I did most of the sights on my own two feet. It is a huge city, but the main attractions are a lot closer to each other than you think, and if not, there will be an underground station nearby. If you do love to escape into the historic tales of such an aged city, then having a tour guide to paint all of the barbaric details along the way is seriously intense. Otherwise, put on your favorite walking shoes and simply explore at your own pace.

To catch all of the main attractions in one afternoon, I suggest starting in Leicester Square for a taste of the West End’s cinema and entertainment, described as one big, youthful party. At least one of your nights is bound to be spent here, being that it is one of the busiest spots in London. Comedy shows, theater performances, nightclubs—it’s all in Leicester Square. From there, walk through Piccadilly Circus toward Buckingham Palace. Once you’ve had your eye-opening dose of the gigantic royal residence, stroll through the British trees in St James’s Park toward the River Thames. Fantasize about The Ritz London as you pass it by, and continue along for more mammoth, jaw-dropping, waterside sights like Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, and be sure to ride on the London Eye for the best view available. Continue further down the river and take a walk across Tower Bridge. This tour is definitely where the bulk of your holiday pictures will be snapped.

Winnings to Spend?

From Paddington, a walk through Hyde Park will take you to Knightsbridge, home to Harrods—the most extravagant department store you will ever walk through. For more affordable shopping, you can’t go past the famous Oxford Street. Although, London is most known for some of the world’s best, and quirkiest, markets. Portobello Road in Notting Hill is my absolute favorite. I’ve picked up some awesome, vintage accessories here and it's the perfect place to find some interesting gifts for your friends and family. For something more alternative, Camden Market is a great spot to pick up some black and metal.

Wine and Dine

The beauty of such a huge city is that there’s a great restaurant to visit around every corner in any cuisine, at any price. Nahm in Knightsbridge is the first Michelin-starred Thai restaurant in Europe, and with an Aussie chef cooking my favorite cuisine, I just couldn’t resist! If you love Thai, but prefer it on a budget (and still in style), then Busaba is a must, there are eight of them around town, I ate at (and loved) the one right by Leicester Square on Panton Street, where you’ll get some great dishes for less than £10. Another reason to fall in love with Busaba? They even offer some recipes on their website, allowing you to try a DIY-version of some of their signature dishes at home.

Sitting in the shadow of Tower Bridge is a great way to enjoy a lunch in London. For that, or for an amazing view at night, catch The Tube to Tower Hill station, cross the street toward the river and pick any bar or restaurant along Shad Thames. I had some excellent Italian food at Cantina del Ponte in a perfect spot outside by the water. After dinner you can continue sipping on the wine list there, or head along the water for another watering hole such as All Bar One.

Where Else?

A favorite spot I stumbled across two years ago was Carnaby London. It's a dainty little shopping and nightlife district north of Soho, just around the corner from Leicester Square with more than 150 shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs. The quaintness of Carnaby is a nice contrast from the grandness of the surrounding attractions and a great place to spend a day and/or night in London.

Hurricane Irene Atlantic City

In case you were lost in a fault line or too busy canoeing down a street to follow the latest gaming news, we've got it for you right here. Hurricane Irene didn't cause much structural damage to Atlantic City's casinos, but the Gaming-enforced weekend shutdown cost the financially flailing casinos more than $40 million. A little to the north, Connecticut casino executives wished a natural disaster would swallow the Massachusetts legislators who finally agreed on the details of a bill to allow three resort-style casinos and a slot parlor in Massachusetts. And MGM took to the courts to bring man-made disaster to an online poker site it says is violating its Gold Strike trademark.

Irene Washes Away Key Summer Weekend for Atlantic City Casinos

Hurricane Irene wreaked havoc up and down the eastern seaboard over the weekend, and Atlantic City's bank accounts were squarely in its sights. All 11 or the city's casino resorts closed from Friday night until Monday, only the third time since casinos opened there 33 years ago that all were closed at the same time. Late summer weekends are important sources of revenue for Atlantic City. Executives estimate that the total washout of the last one before Labor Day weekend cost between $40 and $45 million in gaming revenues.

Irene did little damage to the shoreline, and other than some minor flooding, all of the casinos escaped physically intact. Yet with their casinos already struggling financially, executives up and down the boardwalk lamented the weather. "It's horrible," Don Marrandino, president of Caesars, Bally's, Harrah's Resort, and Showboat told the Press of Atlantic City. Caesars Entertainment Inc. chairman and CEO Gary Loveman said that lost revenue at those locations, all Caesars properties, totaled more than $25 million. Tropicana CEO Tony Rodio said the weekend cost his property around $4 million.

"This was a major hit financially," said Dennis Gomes, CEO of Resorts Casino Hotel. "It was a $3 million loss for Resorts. You can't recoup it. We had an earthquake, tornadoes, and now a hurricane. What's next, pestilence?"

Some casino management was concerned that customers would think that Atlantic City had been hit hard since the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement required all of the casinos to remain closed until Monday morning. Marketing departments have been busy putting out press releases and offering post-Irene promotions in the hopes of filling their hotel rooms and gaming floor before the Labor Day rush. New Jersey Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno stopped by the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort on Monday to "remind residents and tourists that the Jersey Shore is a great place to visit following Hurricane Irene," according to a press release issued by her office.

The Press of Atlantic City has more on the story. Bloomberg also covers Atlantic City casino losses as part of a state-by-state accounting of the storm's human and financial toll.

Massachusetts Legislators Agree on Proposal for Four State Gaming Properties

Massachusetts took a major step toward legalizing casino gambling last week when Governor Deval Patrick and state House and Senate leaders agreed to a proposal that would license three Las Vegas-style casinos and one slot parlor in the state. After three years of political infighting, all sides seem to have reached an agreement in order create jobs and make up some of the state's $1.8 billion budget shortfall. While Massachusetts leaders have finally agreed on the terms of a bill, it still must be approved by the Legislature.

The bill calls for three casino licenses to be auctioned for a minimum of $85 million each and require developers to invest at least $500 million per hotel-casino. The fourth license, to be sold for upwards of $25 million, would allow the operation of a slot parlor with up to 1,250 machines. Massachusetts would tax 25 percent of the casinos' revenues and 40 percent of the slot parlor's intake. The slot parlor would have to set aside an additional nine percent to subsidize the horse-racing industry, which has been lobbying against added competition from local casinos. All of the properties would be open 24 hours a day and be smoke-free. They could serve free alcohol but must be dry from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.

The bill gives the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian tribe preference for securing one of the licenses but only gives the tribe one year to find land, win community approval, and negotiate a deal with the governor before the state opens the license to competitive bidding. And it could get very competitive. Caesars Entertainment already has a deal with the owner of the Suffolk Downs racetrack to manage a casino if they secure a a license. Las Vegas Sands Corp. has also demonstrated interest. Gary Loveman, Caesars chairman, and Sheldon Adelson, Sands chairman, both live in the Boston area and have political ties to the state.

Analysts say the Massachusetts proposal could have a positive impact on Las Vegas businesses in addition to those seeking operating licenses. Four new gaming properties could create a need for up to 10,000 slot machines, which is good news for gaming equipment providers like International Game Technology. Table game suppliers like Shuffle Master Gaming could also benefit. Those poised to lose the most from the construction of Massachusetts casinos are the two Indians casinos in neighboring Connecticut. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods both draw close to 35 percent of their revenues from Massachusetts residents.

The Boston Globe has more on the politics surrounding the 155-page bill, and CasinoCityTimes.com takes a look at the bill's potential impacts outside of Massachusetts.

MGM Sues Poker Site over Gold Strike Trademark

MGM Resorts International filed a federal lawsuit last Thursday against WorldPokerRewardsClub.com Co. Inc. and Washington resident John George alleging trademark infringement, cybersquatting, and unfair competition. The suit claims that the defendant's websites goldstrikepoker.com and goldstrikepoker.net infringe on MGM's trademark of the name attached to its Gold Strike hotels in Jean, NV and Tunica, MS.

WorldPokerRewardsClub.com Co. owns the subscription-based online poker club now called Gold Rush Poker, billed as "America's first 3-D poker site." Users pay a $19.95 monthly fee to play on the Atlantis Solutions-operated site.

According to the suit, attorneys for MGM asked the defendant to voluntarily transfer the domain names to MGM in July. The suit says that George agreed to change the site's name to Gold Rush Poker but insisted that MGM would have to buy the domain names. After being contacted by MGM, George filed applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark "Gold Strike Poker" and "Goldstrikepoker.com," according to the suit.

"Defendants were and are attempting to frustrate or divert Internet traffic intended for the trademark owner and its Gold Strike hotel casinos," the lawsuit charges. It asserts counts of cybersquatting and unfair competition in addition to trademark infringement.

Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth

Tuesday's 2011 World Series of Poker night on ESPN airs two new episodes every week on the way to the highly anticipated November Nine. Last week, Day 3 coverage of the Main Event concluded, which meant four of the 24 Main Event episodes were in the can. With 6,865 players entering this year's “Big One,” creating a prize pool of $64,531,000, you could tell the capstone event of the money bubble was going to be entertaining.

Heading into Day 4, a plethora of notables remained including Jeff Lisandro, Erick Lindgren, Amanda Musumeci, Daniel Negreanu, Sam Barnhart, Vanessa Rousso, Jean-Robert Bellande, Ben Lamb, and of course Phil Hellmuth. With only 852 players in the field, the average chip count was 241,725. Here is a look at the top chip counts a few minutes into the broadcast:

Let’s Get It On: With the blinds at 2,000/4,000 and a 500 ante, former World Champion Phil Hellmuth was at the featured table, albeit with a short stack of 77,000. He managed to take a small pot on the first hand of the broadcast before the following one developed. Hellmuth limped from middle position with {K-Spades}{6-Spades} and Patrick Devlin, who Norman Chad joked looked a little like Arnold Schwarzenegger, also came along from the button with {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Martin de Knijff checked his option from the big blind holding {A-Diamonds}{3-Spades}, and there was three-way action to the {5-Spades}{A-Spades}{Q-Spades} flop.

All three players checked, including Hellmuth, who had flopped the nuts. When the {J-Hearts} appeared on the turn, de Knijff bet 7,000, Hellmuth raised to 18,000, Devlin folded, and de Knijff made the call. The {2-Clubs} river saw de Knijff check-fold to Hellmuth’s 36,500 bet, and the 1989 Champ chipped up to 115,000. Interestingly, the only other former champs left in the field were Berry Johnston (1986) and Robert Varkonyi (2002).

Brenes Busted: Two-time bracelet winner Humberto Brenes got all-in preflop holding {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} only to run into Mike Ellis' {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}. With 151,500 in the pot, and Brenes singing to the crowd, the board ran out an uneventful {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{a-Clubs}. Brenes tossed what appeared to be one of his patented shark card protectors to Ellis before making his way to the rail.

Hello, Sam Barnhart: If you haven’t heard of Sam Barnhart in 2011, you may be living under a rock. In February, he won the WSOP-Circuit Harrah’s Tunica Main Event and qualified for the National Championship, which was held at Caesars Palace right before the 2011 WSOP kicked off at the Rio. Barnhart managed to win that too, earning $350,000, and carried that momentum into the Main Event. ESPN must have been impressed with Barnhart, who laid down pocket kings preflop on Day 3 (rightly so as his opponent had aces), and decided to give him some air time on the secondary feature table.

It was there that Barnhart won a big pot off Patrick Poirier, before becoming involved in a hand with John Wilson. It began when action folded to Barnhart on the button and he made it 11,000 to go with {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. Wilson defended from the big blind holding {A-Spades}{6-Spades} and the two were heads-up to the {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop. Wilson checked, Barnhart bet 30,000, and Wilson moved all-in for 146,500. Barnhart took his time before tossing in a call and discovered he was a 64 percent favorite. Neither the {2-Spades} turn nor {9-Hearts} river changed a thing, and Barnhart captured the 321,000 pot.

Lisandro Loses: Jeff Lisandro was all-in preflop with {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and up against the {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} of Lance Steinberg. We’re not sure how the money got in, but we do know there was 148,500 in the pot and Steinberg was a 59 percent favorite. Unfortunately for Lisandro, his opponent became a 95 percent favorite on the {3-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} flop, while the {8-Diamonds} turn left him drawing dead. The meaningless {2-Spades} was put out on the river for good measure as the resigned Lisandro made a quick exit.

Casa del Hellmuth: An entertaining feature on Phil Hellmuth’s home in Palo Alto, California, was shown, which included the “Poker Brat” picking a lemon from a tree in his backyard and eating a part of the skin. “Wow, I rarely do this, but it’s really not bad,” Hellmuth said as he chowed down. Hellmuth also discussed his life outside of poker, which included writing books and pursuing other business ventures.

Quad Kings for Cody: In the second hour of broadcast, $25,000 Heads-Up Champion and Triple Crown winner Jake Cody moved all-in preflop for 27,000 with {K-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} and was called by Matthew Kay's {A-Spades}{8-Spades} in the small blind. Cody was a 68 percent favorite, but the {A-Diamonds} in the window no doubt gave him some concern. Luckily for him, it was followed by the {Q-Spades} and {K-Hearts}. Cody had hit a set, but the {2-Spades} turn gave Kay a flush draw. Sure enough, the river was a spade when the {K-Spades} plunked down. Unfortunately for Kay, it was a spade that gave Cody quads!

Queens for the Lady: Amanda Musumeci found herself involved in a monster pot worth 620,500 when a raising war resulted in her {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts} racing against A.P. Phahurat’s {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}. The latter stood from his chair and donned his backpack, prompting Musumeci to ask, “Are you standing up because you’re ready to go?”

“I’m a little scared, not gonna lie,” Phahurat admitted. The {3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs} flop was safe for Musumeci, as was the {10-Diamonds} turn. To stay alive, Phahurat needed either an ace or king on the river, but it was not meant to be because the {J-Spades} rolled off. With that, Musumeci was up to around a million in chips.

Hellmuth Exits Stage Left: Phil Hellmuth, who was down to around 20 big blinds, raised to 12,500 with {3-Clubs}{3-Spades} only to have Martin de Knijff three-bet to 32,500 from the small blind. Hellmuth made the call and watched as de Knijff led out for 30,000 on the {2-Spades}{J-Spades}{Q-Clubs} flop. Hellmuth asked for a count and took his time before moving all-in for 68,500. De Knijff snap-called and Hellmuth only had a 13 percent chance of winning the hand.

The {4-Spades} turn gave Hellmuth a flush draw and improved his chances to 25 percent, but the {9-Clubs} river was not what he needed. Just like that, Hellmuth’s 2011 WSOP came to an end. Surprisingly, he was gracious in defeat, shaking hands with the entire table before making his exit from the main stage.

When asked by Kara Scott to reflect on his 2011 WSOP success, Hellmuth responded: “We’ll let history be the judge of the World Series. I mean three seconds, it hurts a lot. But I know, on some levels, I did phenomenally well. I can’t go around talking about I’m great at this or great at that, I just can’t do that anymore. History has to be the judge of that.”

Money Bubble: With 695 players remaining and only 693 slated to get paid, players were anxious to lock up a minimum $19,359 payday. It was at that point that Daniel Negreanu found himself all-in for his last 43,000 on a flop of {A-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. Lucky for Negreanu, he was out in front with {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} against Andrea Vezzani's {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. “First time I’ve been all-in the whole tournament, it’s kinda scary,” Negreanu joked with the crowd. Much to his delight, he doubled since neither the {6-Clubs} turn nor {J-Spades} river helped Vezzani.

Unfortunately, Reza Kashani was not so lucky. He got all-in holding {K-Spades}{J-Spades} on a flop of {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} only to run into 2010 November Niner Joseph Cheong who was holding {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. The {8-Hearts} turn left Kashani looking for a ten on the river, but it was the {Q-Hearts} that spiked to give Cheong quads. With that, Kashani became the 2011 WSOP Main Event Bubble Boy, with the consolation prize of a free entry into the 2012 Main Event!

Interestingly, Cheong was the sole remaining survivor from last year’s November Nine.

Closing it Out: In the last hand of the episode, Jake Cody got all-in preflop with {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and was facing off against the {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} Fabio Sousa. With 293,000 in the pot, the board ran out {5-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{10-Hearts} and Cody exited with his third cash of the 2011 WSOP.

Tune in Next Week: Every Tuesday leading up to November, ESPN will air episodes of the 2011 WSOP Main Event. Be sure to either check your local listings or come back next week for our recap of the action.
