Daniela Horno

The PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Chile continued on Friday at the Enjoy Casino & Resort in Vina del Mar as the surviving 188 players from Days 1a and 1b combined for Day 2 action. After eight levels of play, that field was whittled down to 32 players, and Daniela Horno was leading the way.

With a prize pool of $651,840 at stake, including a $129,470 first-place prize, the players were intent on making the money, meaning they needed to finish in the top 104. The early levels of action put an end to any money dreams Carlos Perez, Juan Carlos, Odilon Machuca and Leandro Csome may have had, because they were all sent to the rail empty handed.

LAPT Season 4 Player of the Year Pablo Gonzalez, also failed to reach the money. His elimination came when he moved all in for 25,400 from the cutoff after the player in the hijack had raised to 4,800. The button got out of the way, and the small blind made the call. After the hijack folded, Gonzalez tabled {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}, but was behind the {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} of the small blind.

Gonzalez was in a bad spot, though the {5-Diamonds} appeared in the window; unfortunately for him, it was followed by the {Q-Diamonds} and {A-Hearts}. It was a set-over-set flop, meaning Gonzalez needed the last five in the deck to stay alive. The {7-Spades} turn was not it, and neither was the {2-Hearts}. Gonzalez was eliminated from the Main Event without a cash.

After Claudio Scandura finished as the unfortunate bubble boy and the players reached the money, the eliminations came fast. Brent Sheirbon was one of the first to hit the rail post-money bubble. It happened when he moved all in under the gun for his last 26,000. One by one his opponents folded around to the player in the big blind, who announced a call.

Showdown

Sheirbon opted to put it all in with the suited one-gappers, and it appeared to pay off when the flop came down {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{10-Clubs}. Unfortunately for Sheirbon, his hope would be short lived as the dealer burned and turned the {Q-Spades}. The {3-Clubs} river changed nothing, and Sheirbon shook hands with his opponent before making his way to the payout desk in 95th place for $1,550.

Other players following Sheirbon out the door included Juan Amigo (90th - $1,550), Guillermo Pardo (64th - $2,030), Claudio Lopez (57th - $2,030) and Thiago “XTheDecanoX” Nishijima (55th - $2,180).

Daniela Horno finished sixth in the LAPT Chile Main Event last year, and is positioning herself for a deep run this year. On Day 2, a big hand developed when action folded to an unknown player in the cutoff, who put in a raise to 16,000. The player on the button then moved all in for 147,000, and Horno moved all in over the top from the small blind for around 160,000.

After the player in the cutoff got out of the way, Horno rolled over {A-Hearts}{A-Spades} and her opponent stood up and flipped over the inferior {K-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}. The {3-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{5-Hearts} flop was about as unexciting as they come, and the {2-Diamonds} turn left the player on the button drawing dead. The {A-Diamonds} on the river improved Horno to a full house and she took down the healthy pot, chipping up to 320,000 in the process.

As if that wasn’t enough, a couple of hours later, action folded to Horno on the button and she opened for 25,000 in what would turn out to be the last hand of the night. Ryan O'Donnell was in the small blind and moved all in for around 160,000, and Horno made the call.

Showdown

O'Donnell was in big trouble and in desperate need of some help, which he found on the {7-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{5-Spades} flop. Suddenly Horno needed a king to eliminate her opponent, and while she didn't catch it on the {9-Diamonds} turn, she did on the river when the {K-Hearts} spiked. The railbirds reacted sharply as O'Donnell simply shook his head in disbelief. He was eliminated in 33rd place for $2,610, and Horno bagged up 767,000 and ended as the Day 2 chip leader.

End of Day 2 Top 10 Chip Counts

The 32 players will return on Saturday at 1200 CLST (0800 PDT) for Day 3, where the player will play down to a final table. As always, you can follow the action right here on PokerNews.

Aliro Diaz

Day 4 of the 2012 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Chile concluded on Sunday by crowning the first champion of Season 5. The final eight players of a 651-player field returned to the Enjoy Casino & Resort in Viña del Mar to play down to a winner, which took approximately five hours to determine. At the end of the day, Aliro Diaz hoisted the trophy and took home $76,560 in prize money.

2012 LAPT Chile Final Table Payouts

At the start of the final table, which included three Chileans, two players from Colombia, two Brazilians and one Argentinian, the big question was whether of not a local would capture the LAPT Chile National Poker Championship title.

Here’s a look at how the final table stacked up at the start of the day.

2012 LAPT Chile Final Table

It took about 40 minutes for the first elimination of the day to occur, and it happened right after Nicholas Batt doubled Javier Venegas. It began when Felipe Velasquez opened for 90,000 and was met with an all-in shove by Batt, for around 725,000. Velasquez made the call with {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} and was off to the races against Batt's {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

The railbirds were on their feet as the dealer put down the flop of {8-Spades}{A-Spades}{5-Diamonds}. The Velasquez contingent erupted in cheers as their man had hit an ace to take the lead. The {7-Diamonds} turn was of no consequence, and neither was the {2-Diamonds} river. Velasquez chipped up to 2.8 million on the hand, while Batt became the eighth-place finisher worth $13,040.

Not long after, action folded to Diaz in the cutoff and he opened for 95,000. After the button got out of the way, Halysson Sala moved all in from the small blind for 505,000 total holding {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}. The big blind got out of the way, and Diaz called with {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}.

It was a classic race, but Sala needed to improve to stay alive. The {3-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} flop was not what he was looking for, and neither was the {K-Clubs} turn, though it gave him some extra outs. Unfortunately for Sala, salvation would not be delivered on the river as the {5-Spades} bricked, and he was eliminated in seventh place for $17,470.

It was at that point that a six-handed deal that was struck. Chip leader Velasquez guaranteed himself $60,000, while each of the other five players locked up $40,000. Per the terms, each would add to their respective totals depending on their finish as follows: first — $36,560; second — $26,000; third — $18,000; fourth — $14,000; fifth — $10,000; and sixth — $7,000.

It took some time for the next elimination to develop, but it came when Velasquez opened to 140,000 in the hijack and was called by Diaz in the cutoff. From the small blind, Sergio Escobar, who began the day as chip leader, shoved for about 475,000, and Velasquez isolated with an all-in re-raise.

Showdown
Velasquez: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Escobar: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

The {A-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop paired Velasquez and left Escobar in a world of hurt. Neither the {6-Diamonds} turn nor {7-Spades} river offered help, and Escobar’s Main Event run ended in sixth place for $47,000.

A few hands later, action folded to Venegas on the button and he wasted little time in moving all in for 710,000. Leonardo Olivares was in the big blind and thought for a solid minute before making the call. Venegas turned over {K-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, and seemed excited his cards we live against the {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades} of Olivares.

When the {7-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} flop came down and Venegas hit his king, his supporters erupted with cheers from the rail; however, it was short lived as the {A-Hearts} peeled off on the turn. This time it was Olivares's rail that erupted. During the commotion, the harmless {10-Clubs} was put out on the river, and Venegas shook hands with the victor before taking his leave in fifth place for $50,000.

In a blind-versus-blind battle of Chileans, Velasquez moved all in from the small for around 1.4 million and Diaz snap-called from the big blind. Velasquez flipped over {A-Spades}{5-Spades} and was in trouble against Diaz's {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}, especially after the {4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} flop delivered the latter a set. Velasquez picked up a gut-shot straight draw to a three, but it was not meant to be as the {K-Clubs} hit the turn followed by the {7-Spades} on the river. Velasquez was eliminated in fourth place for $74,000.

A short time later, Joao Lopes opened to 300,000 on the button and Olivares folded his small blind. Diaz, though, re-raised all in from the big blind with the big stack. Lopes called all in for about 1.3 million.

Showdown
Lopes: {3-Hearts}{3-Clubs}
Diaz: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

Lopes' cries for a three failed to materialize as the board came down {10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{4-Hearts} to end his Main Event in third place.

On the seventh hand of heads-up play, Diaz opened for 185,000 and then called Olivares's three-bet to 500,000. When the flop fell {J-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, Olivares thought for a moment before announcing all in for around 2.5 million. Diaz thought long and hard, approximately two minutes, before announcing a call.

Showdown

The crowd was on its feet as the dealer burned and turned the {5-Spades}. In order to survive, Olivares needed either an ace or queen on the river. The dealer burned one more time and put out the {J-Spades}. With that, LAPT Chile was over as Olivares shook hands with his opponent and made his way to the payout desk to collect $66,000.

The next stop on the PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour will be in May at the Mantra Resort, Spa and Casino in Punta del Este, Uruguay, and of course PokerNews will be there to bring you all the action straight from the felt.
