Phil Hellmuth

Everyone in poker started somewhere — that’s the premise of our series, My First. We catch up with various poker pros and personalities to get the story on a significant "poker" first in their lives. In the latest installment of My First, we catch up with the “Poker Brat,” Phil Hellmuth Jr., and talk about the first time he ever cashed in the World Series of Poker.

For those who may not know, Hellmuth holds the record for most “in-the-money” finishes with 85, which is 13 more than runner-up Men “The Master” Nguyen. Obviously, 11 of those cashes were victories, one for each of his gold bracelets, while plenty more were fourth-place finishes or better. All told, Hellmuth has amassed $7,842,189 in WSOP earning, averaging $92,261 per cash.

Hellmuth’s exploits began 23 years ago when he notched his first cash in the 1988 WSOP Event #6 $1,500 Limit 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo, taking fifth for $15,40. PokerNews recently caught up with Hellmuth to discuss his first cash, as well as his first Main Event cash, which came later that year.

“I didn’t really know much about the World Series of Poker. I was a young professional player, but the World Series wasn’t on ESPN. It was hyped as the most beloved event, but I didn’t know many people on tour. I kept hearing people talk about this World Series of Poker so I went and played. That might have been the first tournament I ever played at the WSOP, I don’t know, I wish I had better records of that."

“Anyway, it was a seven-card stud event, hi/lo, and I had been playing a lot of split games in Madison, Wisconsin. I do remember well what happened. I had close to the chip lead with around six players left. I got involved in a hand where I started with a nine right away, then I hit a seven and an eight. So my board was {6-}{7-}{8-}{9-} and I had {7-}{8-} in the hole, that’s the story. The last card I looked at was four-across, meaning it was a nine or ten. I was against a guy who looked like he had a low draw. He had hit an ace on sixth street and I fired. He check-raised all-in, we were playing 5,000/10,000, I remember clearly."

“I remember thinking I shouldn’t bet this, but no, you have to bet your two pair. So I bet and he check-raised me my last 6,000 with aces up. I called and I was eliminated. I was really frustrated that I lost that pot, plus a couple right before it, and all of a sudden I finished in fifth place."

“I remember that hand I remember a guy named Lance, I think he want on to win that tournament, or maybe it was Joe Petro who went on to win that tournament.* Petro and I actually made a save, so what happened was he asked me if I wanted to save 10 percent. I said yes and I remember he had to give me like $5,000 or something. I’ve always loved Joe Petro. Lance, I remember just thinking how lucky he was that hand, I was kind of steamed up for a couple of days afterwards. I still remember the hand, he had aces and fives.”

Hellmuth also had another poker first in 1988. It was the first time he cashed in the WSOP Main Event. He placed 33rd in the 1988 Main Event after being eliminated by Johnny Chan, the man who successfully defended his title, only to lose it to Hellmuth the following year.

“None other than Johnny Chan busted me. I wasn’t really familiar with any of the World Series of Poker history, and I didn’t know he was the defending champion. He came to my table with five tables left, about 45 players, and I was jamming it up, I mean I was playing some strong poker. I remember I had about 90,000 in chips, which was a lot of chips, I was in really good shape."

“Chan came to my table and I tried to bluff him. I still remember that hand well. He had {A-}{K-} and the board read {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{Q-Spades}{2-Spades}, he couldn’t beat a flush. I had {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and he called me. He was short on chips but that pot almost doubled him up, and then I remember he had {J-}{J-} when I had {10-}{10-} and the flop came {7-}{8-}{9-}. I put the rest of my chips in, so he ended up getting all of my chips in the end. From then on I knew who he was. Of course the next year we played heads-up."

“Interesting thing about that 33rd place finish, when I was eliminated, one of my friends, Big Al, who was one of the best poker players from Wisconsin, got in my face and started screaming at me a little bit. He said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you’ll never have this chance again, blah, blah, blah, and I looked at him and said, ‘Al, I’ll be there every year.’ I remember that, as well.”

*Editor’s note: Lance Hilt won the event for $123,600 and Petro placed second for $67,980.

Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth

Phil Hellmuth made another World Series of Poker final table, this time in beautiful Cannes, France. Can he really surpass Ben "Benba" Lamb and win WSOP Player of the Year? What is SouthPointPoker.com? Who is Benny Spindler? Who framed Roger Rabbit?

OK, that last one is a 1988 movie about an animated, crime-solving rabbit, but the rest of those questions are addressed in this week's five thoughts.

1. Insert Cannes pun here

In February, the World Series of Poker announced that the WSOPE would be relocating from London, England, to Cannes, France. The poker boom is just now taking off in France, and both BarrierePoker.fr and Caesars Interactive Entertainment were looking to capitalize on the situation. During the months leading up to the WSOPE, many people within the industry believed it would be a good move, and their premonitions have already been confirmed in the first week of play.

Entering the 2011 WSOPE, the largest event ever was in 2009, when a £1,000 event attracted 608 runners. That record was quickly demolished, as Event #2 €1,090 No Limit Hold’em welcomed 771 entrants over two days, making it the largest WSOPE event in history.

The numbers aren't the only upside in Cannes, though — the scenery and weather are awesome. Even poker players (who stay inside for roughly 23 hours a day) would agree that mid-seventies and sunny is light-years better than low sixties and cloudy. Also, Cannes is not as busy as London, making it easier to get around. Poker players love being able to arrive at a poker tournament during the last seconds of late registration, and in Cannes they won't have to worry about congestion and maneuvering around red double-deckers.

Canadian poker pro Terrence Chan wrote an extensive blog post about the pros and cons of the new location. You should check it out, especially if you’re looking for another Cannes pun.

2. Hellmuth is on the hunt

We make fun of Phil Hellmuth all the time. In fact, during the WSOP, yours truly predicted that the self-proclaimed Poker Brat would never win a non-hold’em bracelet. Hellmuth promptly final tabled the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Championship and the $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship, finishing runner-up in both and giving your boy a good sweat.

That’s what Hellmuth does though — he refuses to quit. Sometimes his heightened competitive nature gets him in trouble (see: every televised cash game he’s ever played), but there is something to be said for his determination to be great.

Hellmuth traveled to France determined to snatch the WSOP Player of the Year lead away from Ben “Benba” Lamb, and with a seventh-place finish in Event #1 €2,500 Six-Max No Limit Hold’em Hellmuth is inching closer. Lamb sits with 659.05 points (759.05 if you add the 100 he’s guaranteed with a ninth-place finish in the Main Event), but Hellmuth is technically on top with 755.25. With a min-cash (5 points), he would surpass Lamb, and then have to fade Benba at the final table. Hellmuth isn’t thinking min-cash, however.

“5 events left; I’M NOT DONE!” he tweeted on Monday.

It looks like I’ll be sweating another non-hold’em bracelet event, and unless Lamb can aslo cash in one or two WSOPE events, he may be in trouble.

3. SouthPointPoker.com has a nice ring to it

Not really, but Michael Gaughan, the owner of the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa, is on to something. Gaughan announced the launch of SouthPointPoker.com at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E), and the site launched on Oct. 6. The 100% free and 100% legal site was approved by the Nevada Gaming Board and plans to offer a $10,000 WSOP Main Event seat each month. Even though South Point has a very, very small poker room, it has strong ties to the poker world — both Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker have been filmed there.

The initial reviews of the software are not good, but this is a step in the right direction. South Point became the first land-based casino to open an online poker room (there is an argument for Caesars Entertainment and WSOP.com), and this could lead to a Pandora’s box-like chain reaction. Gaughan told PokerNews that, “Supposedly the Nevada Gaming Commission is going to come out with regulations for intrastate [gambling] in January of 2012. So, what I’m trying to do is learn.”

It sounds like something is on the horizon, and perhaps Gaughan simply wanted to be “the first.” If this is the case, then there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for American players, but only time will tell. What we do know is that land-based casinos will be major players when the time comes, and perhaps, with this move, SouthPointPoker.com will be among them.

4. Spindler ships second $1 million cash

Benny Spindler entered the final day of the 2011 European Poker Tour London Main Event third in chips, but battled his way to the top, eventually defeating Steve O’Dwyer heads up to win £750,000 ($1,172241), and the EPT title. This is Spindler’s second big cash of 2011 (he finished second in the €25,000 High Roller event at EPT Grand Final for €316,000 (469,017)), and his second career $1 million cash (he finished third in the 2009 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event for $1,100,000). Spindler now has over $3 million in career earnings, and, with nearly $1.8 million in earnings this year, is 15th on Hendon Mob’s 2011 Money List.

Spindler isn’t a household name because he hasn’t fared well at the WSOP (only three cashes that total less than $50,000), but his résumé is obviously very impressive. The 26-year-old German native is probably most famous for flopping quads against Alex Gomes at the aforementioned 2009 PCA Main Event, and rocking a Justin Bieber-like hair cut. We’ll be keeping our eyes on Spindler for the remainder of 2011 and into 2012, when perhaps he will make another big splash in the Bahamas.

5. Musumeci’s Main Event

Usually the fifth thought is reserved for a video, but last week’s Strategy With Kristy Podcast featuring Amanda Musumeci was awesome. Listen in as she recounts her 2011 WSOP Main Event.

Phil Hellmuth

The 2011 World Series of Poker Europe is in full swing at its new location, Cannes, France. The second day of Event #1 began with 80 players, but after 10 levels, only 12 remained. Event #2 kicked off with its first of two flights and after 381 players entered, it is looking like it could break last year's record of largest WSOPE event.

Event #1: €2,680 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold'em — Guillaume Humbert Holds Chip Lead Moving into Final Day

Day 2 of Event #1, the €2,500 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em, began with a change of venue. Instead of playing at the Hotel Majestic Barriere, players were moved across the road to the Le Croisette Casino Barriere for the first time. Luckily, the change of venue did not affect the action and railbirds and media members alike were once again treated to a scintillating display of poker.

Eighty players began the day with a plan to play either ten levels or get down to the final table of six. When the day ended, the ten levels had won that particular race and 12 players remained. At the head of the pack was online player Guillaume Humbert, bagging 541,000 chips. The young Swiss player, who is playing in his first major live tournament, had his major breakthrough after eliminating the Day 1 chip leader Flavien Guenan. Then as the end of the day neared, he also eliminated Johan Sundell and moved over the half million mark for the first time.

If Humbert looks over his shoulder, he will see a man desperate for not only a WSOPE bracelet but the Player of the Year award, as well. Phil Hellmuth was back to his old tricks on Saturday, and a great final level took him over the 400,000 mark, finishing in second place on the chip leaderboard.

Other notable players left in the field are David Benyamine (253,000), Anton Wigg (201,000) and Casey Kastle (119,000).

The final day will resume at 1500 CET (0600 PDT) with plenty of deep-stacked 6-max poker action. Be sure and check out the Live Reporting Blog of the play-by-play.

Event #2: €1,090 No-Limit Hold'em — Hinrichsen Leads Day 1a Field

Day 1a of Event #2 at the 2011 World Series of Poker Europe wrapped up on Saturday. The €1,090 No-Limit Hold'em event attracted 381 players for its first starting flight and is on pace to smash the record for the largest WSOP Europe event — 608 entries. Fifty-four player remain; Australian Andrew Hinrichsen is leading the way with 63,900 in chips.

Hinrichsen was a permanent fixture at the top of the counts all day long. In one of his bigger hands he played toward the end of the night, he bet 8,500 on the board of {J-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}. His opponent tanked and went back and forth for a little while. Then, finally, the player raised all-in for 13,075. Hinrichsen called and his opponent showed {K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} for a pair of jacks. Hinrichsen tabled the {9-Hearts}{3-Clubs} for two pair and won the pot.

Plenty of notable players were in the mix on Saturday, but not all could advance to Day 2. Mike Leah, Jean-Robert Bellande, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Phil Collins, Jason Mercier, Erik Seidel, Barry Greenstein and Nacho Barbero were a handful of players to hit the rail on the day.

Among those moving on to the second day of play are, Toby Lewis, Randy Dorfman, McLean Karr, Farzad Bonyadi, Richard Toth, Erik Cajelais, Eoghan O'Dea, Matt Waxman and Dan Shak. They'll all be part of the group that joins up with the remaining players from Day 1b to continue play on Day 2.

Day 2 will begin on Monday at 1400 CET (0500 PDT). Action for Sunday's Day 1b flight kicks off at 1200 CET (0300 PDT) with nine levels of play on the schedule.

Palihapitiya 'Likes' Poker

Chamath Palihapitiya is a venture capitalist by day, but he's truly a poker player at heart. The former VP of Growth, Mobile and International at Facebook was recently featured in ESPN's coverage of the World Series of Poker during an impressive run through the Main Event. This week, his story was highlighted by the New York Times in an article that included a photo of Palihapitiya cozied up to a poker table — the same table that Phil Hellmuth has admittedly lost money playing at.

Palihapitiya, who left Facebook in June to start his own VC firm, told The Times that he shudders at the memory of wearing a buttoned-down shirt and pressed pants at work, favoring jeans and flip-flops. Yup, he's definitely a poker player.

Even though the article doesn't delve into his life as a competitive poker player, it's still a great read; especially since we expect Palihapitiya to be around the poker scene for a while.

Final Table at the ANZPT Darwin Main Event

A final table was reached at the ANZPT Darwin $2,200 Main Event on Friday as nine players were left vying for a top prize of $36,480. Jack Drake extended his cheap lead one more day as he enters the final table with a slight advantage over Jonathan Dangio, the only non-Aussie to make the final nine. The native of New Caledonia owns 232,300 in chips, 41,000 short of the leader, but the top two stacks tower over the rest of the seven players at the final table.

The major story leading up to the final table was the ANZPT Player of the Year race between Leo Boxell and Danny Chevalier. The top two players in the standings were still alive with 18 remaining at Darwin, but Boxell's run ended when he lost a three-way all in with {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs} to the pocket fives of Jamie Hill. That opened the door for Chevalier to claim the POY honor with a top 10 finish, which he ultimately secured by coasting to the final table as a short stack.
