The Weekly Turbo

Did you miss any of the top poker news stories this week? Well you've come to the right place to get caught up. We're covering Dan "Jungleman" Cates' WSOP Main Event challenge, Australia's move toward legalized online poker, and more.

Poker Players

The Generous Jungleman

For the second straight year, high-stakes superstar Dan "Jungleman" Cates is buying one lucky player into the World Series of Poker Main Event.

Cates, 22, is giving away a Main Event seat to a person who performs a good deed and records it on video. All applicants must upload the video to YouTube and then Tweet the video to Cates. There is no limit to the number of entries per person, but all videos must be submitted by June 20.

The winner will receive a seat to the WSOP Main Event, free air travel and a free room at the Rio. Cates will also throw in a free poker lesson.

"I will never forget when I was playing low stakes in college and I don’t take for granted any success I have had," says Cates, who played in his first WSOP last year." I want to give something back to those who are just falling in love with the game or haven’t had the opportunities I am lucky to have had."

Last year, Cates held a raffle for the WSOP Main Event seat. He tweeted his location around Vegas leading up to the event and gave away tickets for the random drawing.

The full set of rules for this year's contest can be found at the PartyPoker Blog.

Daniel's Weekly Rant

As usual, Daniel released his Weekly Rant on Wednesday. This week, Negreanu announces a WSOP contest for his fans where he's giving the first place winner the opportunity to win 1 percent of what he cashes for during the WSOP. There are other prizes up for grabs too. He also plugs the $25,000 fantasy poker draft, then breaks down a hand he played at the WPT World Championship.

Big One for One Drop Gets Tougher

High-stakes online cash player Jens "Jeans89" Kyllönen is the latest poker pro to throw his hat in the ring for the $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop at this summer's World Series of Poker.

Kyllönen, one of the biggest winners on PokerStars this year, told Pokerisivut.com that he intends to put up the entire buy-in himself but may sell some shares as the event gets closer. Players are required to post a $50,000 deposit upon registering for the event, after which the complete buy-in fee must be settled two weeks before the day of the event.

"Basically I had a good amount of winnings from this year, and I decided to go for this once in a lifetime opportunity, said Kyllönen."The list of players seems very nice, and the charity aspect brings a nice extra value to the tournament. The most important reason for me to play this tournament is, however, the chance to take the lead from Juha Helppi in the Finnish all-time money list."

In addition to the 30 players who have confirmed their participation for the event, players like Phil Hellmuth, Antonio Esfandiari, Sam Trickett and Andrew Robl have expressed interest putting up the seven-figure buy-in. Unfortunately, the World Series of Poker says it will not release an updated list of confirmations until next month. During the May 9 conference call with the media, WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart said the total number of confirmed participants was around 40. The event will be capped at 48 players with no exceptions.

Poker Legislation

Good News, Mate

Efforts to legalize online poker in Australia are reportedly in the works, according to several news reports from Down Under this week.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Australian government has informed the gaming industry that legislation to allow online poker and sports betting could be applied in the next six to 12 months. From there, sources believe that online poker will be introduced on a five-year trial period.

The newspaper said it has obtained documents showing that the government had briefed the Australian gaming industry. The Telegraph also published an email sent by Merrill Lynch gaming analyst Mark Bryan to his clients which briefed them about the government's plans.

"In-play live online betting: Many in the industry indicated that they expect this to be legalized alongside poker in the next six-12 months following overseas precedents," Bryan wrote. "It seems (Communications Minister) Stephen Conroy's department recently provided a brief on draft legislation."

Online gambling has been illegal in Australia since the activity first burst onto the scene in the mid-1990s, but offshore sites have been able to work around Australian legislation. Companies providing online real-money online gambling could face a fine of more than a million dollars under the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act, but no charges have been made in more than a decade since the law was enforced.

Operators Settle with Spain

Spain has now raised more than €60 million in back taxes from online gambling companies seeking licenses to operate in Spain when the new market opens next month.

Betfair announced Wednesday that it "has satisfied all requirements set out by the tax authorities and will be making a payment of not more than €10 million." Paying off the retroactive taxes puts Betfair near the front of the line when Spanish licenses are granted.

"Betfair expects to be awarded a license covering its sportsbook and certain casino products and intends to apply for a poker license shortly thereafter," the company said in a statement. "Under the terms of the licences, operators will pay a Gross Gaming Revenue tax of 25% on Spanish operations — a tax that Betfair has already been paying since May 2011 when Spain’s new gambling act was introduced.

On Monday, bwin.party agreed to pay up to €33.6 million in back taxes to the Spanish Tax Ministry. Sportingbet announced one day later that it will make a payment of €14 million plus surcharges and interest of up to €3.2 million. PokerStars, 888 and bet365 are expected to follow before the new market opens.

Online Gambling Bill Advances in Delaware

A bill that would allow Delaware residents to gamble online was passed by a committee last week and is headed to the House for a vote.

The Associated Press reports that the House Gaming and Parimutuels Committee cleared House Bill 333 after hearing testimony from industry experts about the security of Internet wagering. The bill would allow sites to offer games such as poker, blackjack, digital slot machines.

HB 333 calls for a centralized online gambling platform to be regulated by the state Lottery Office. Delaware casinos have been struggling to compete against casinos on the East Coast, and the Department of Finance estimates HB 333 would generate $7.75 million in revenue for the state next fiscal year.

Poker Business

Gold Star to PokerStars

PokerStars has been selected as one of the United Kingdom's Best Workplaces by The Great Place to Work® Institute, a consultancy company specializing in workplace assessment and enhancement.

The institute, which has given the awards annually in the U.K. since 2000, assesses the practices of more than 5,500 companies around the world on set of criteria to identify the very best in leadership, people management and positive workplace culture.

PokerStars was ranked No. 22 among the large companies in 2012. The company says it is distinguished by its "robust employee benefits and rewards, strong professional development opportunities and a diverse workforce."

The Lost Episodes

The NBC Sports Network, formerly Versus, will air two weeks of a never-before-seen Poker After Dark in June, a source close to the show told PokerNews this week.

The $200,000 buy-in cash game will begin airing Monday, June 4 at 12 a.m. EDT. The lineup of pros includes David "Viffer" Peat, Eli Elezra, David Oppenheim, Patrik Antonius, Phil Ivey, and Tom Dwan. Footage of the game was shot in 2010 and was scheduled to air last year, but the show was cancelled by NBC in the aftermath of Black Friday.

Earlier this year, Mori Eskandani of POKER PROductions told PokerNews that he feels like there will be a "bunch of [poker] shows coming back" in the next year or so. Eskandani added that there was a "90 percent chance" that the NBC National Head Up Championship will return next year after taking a one-year hiatus in 2012.

Judge Delays Black Friday Defendant Sentence

According to Pokerati.com, the sentencing for Black Friday principal Brent Beckley has hit a snag because of a court order filed by District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan.

Beckley, the co-founder of Absolute Poker who was indicted by the Department of Justice on April 15, 2011, pleaded guilty last December to violation of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and bank fraud. Under the plea agreement, Beckley was expected to spend up to 18 months behind bars, well below the maximum prison sentence of 30 years he faced for the original charges.

Kaplan, however, has indicated that the court will consider taking harsher action against Beckley on the ground of "aggravating circumstance.” Kaplan's order states that Beckley "deliberately and unlawfully conspired to circumvent, and circumvented, governing laws of the United States in order to conduct or facilitate an unlawful business or businesses involving billions of dollars from which those businesses gained many millions of dollars."

Beckley's sentencing hearing was scheduled for Monday but has been pushed back to June 28. Read Pokerati.com for more.

ANZPT Perth Day 2: Didier Guerin Leads as Money Bubble Looms

On Day 2 of the PokerStars.net Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT), the final 136 players of a 310-player field returned to battle. It took seven levels of play, but when the field was reduced to 40, Didier Guerin was leading the pack with a healthy stack of 304,000.

Guerin thrived early on when he got all in preflop for 176,000 with {Q-}{Q-} and got two callers who both held {A-}{K-}. One of those players held {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}, so the {J-}{7-}{8-} flop with two diamonds made for a good sweat; however, the {A-} on the turn put a dagger through Guerin’s heart. Fortunately for him, his pain was quickly diminished when a {Q-} spiked on the river for the two outer and the win, chipping him up to 280,000.

Not everyone was as fortunate as the chip leader. Leo Boxell, Josh Barrett, Tony Tartaglia, Kristina Griffith and Aleks Lackovic were just a few of the players who fell on Day 2.

Boxell was fresh of a win in a side event, which finished up just a few hours prior to the start of Day 2, but he was working with a short stack in the Main Event. His demise came when he opened from early position for 6,000 and was met with a three-bet to 15,000 by Daniel Loobas. Boxell made the call and then check-called off his remaining stack on the {6-Spades}{J-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop. Loobas rolled over {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}, which was far ahead of Boxell’s {5-Hearts}{5-Spades}. Neither the {K-Diamonds} turn nor {7-Spades} river changed a thing and the Australian Poker Hall of Famer was sent to the rail.

Here’s a look at the top ten chip counts at the end of Day 2:

Negreanu Makes Appearance on CTV

Daniel Negreanu made an appearance on CTV Friday morning to discuss his recent trip to the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final, his start in live poker, and his epiphany that took him from being a recreational poker player to being a professional.

In the interview, Negreanu talks about his reading ability, soul reads, and even how a baby has the ability to pick up live tells.

Mizzi Issues Health Challenge to Poker Community

Sorel Mizzi is tackling an 84-day fitness program, which has inspired him to issue a challenge to the poker world. He is urging players to start a three-month fitness program of their choosing and document their experience along the way. He is offering every participant the chance to have one online tournament hand history reviewed for every three weeks they’re in the program, with an extra special prize for the winner of his challenge.

As Mizzi explains:

“I will take the winner of this challenge under my wing and do everything I can to help them improve their poker game. It can be anyone. I will help a losing player become a winning player and a winning player increase their ROI and feel more comfortable at higher stakes. This will include reviewing hand histories, sending hand histories of past online tournaments I’ve played, discussing online/live tournament strategy in-depth and making myself available for questions. I’ll do this for at least a year and probably longer on a less time consuming scale. I’m basically using this challenge to find a student that I can teach everything I know about poker to. There is also a future possibility of a staking arrangement. The idea of teaching someone everything I know about poker and helping them fix their leaks and improve their game drastically is very appealing to me.”

Participants will be rated by four judges — Mizzi, Julie Powers, All American Dave and Christina Lindley — in three categories: transformation, blogging and stats. That means you’ll need to take some “before” pictures, keep track of your diet, and document your journey.

To learn how you can participate in the health challenge, visit Mizzi’s blog.

Glantz's Epic Blog

Matt Glantz posted a blog Tuesday discussing his involvement with the Epic Poker League, as well as his position on its Standards & Conduct Committee. Glantz discusses his entire involvement with the league from hearing about it for the first time, to playing his first event, to becoming a part of the S&C and eventually resigning from his position.

In his blog Glantz discusses businesses practices he saw take place in the Epic Poker League from his own point of view, including the Chino Rheem probation and the Michael DiVita incident.

He also talks about hearing rumors of the leagues financial troubles for the first time and what happened when the rumors became truths. “Rumors were true. Ugghhhh. Why does it seem like the bad stuff in this business never ends. I still have hope. It is Chapter 11 (reorganization) bankruptcy and at least not Chapter 7. Wow, this sucks.”

Heartland Poker Tour Event Sets Minnesota Record

Late last week, the Heartland Poker Tour kicked off its latest Main Event at Canterbury Park in Shakopee (Minnesota), which is just south of the Twin Cities. The $1,650 tournament attracted 333 players and created a prize pool of $473,928 — the largest in state history.

With a top prize of $118,482 up for grabs, not to mention a televised final table, the event attracted some familiar names including former World Series of Poker November Niners Jason Senti and Darvin Moon; the highest-earning player in HPT history, Craig Casino; and HPT Daytona Beach winner Joey Chalbaud. Unfortunately, all but one of the aforementioned players failed to make the money in the top 33. The man who did was Casino, who finished in 26th place for $2,796. He was joined by a few other notables including Michael Schneider (30th - $2,796), Erik Burton (22nd - $3,270), Samuel Hanson (18th - $4,834), Chris Wallace (13th - $8,531), Daniel Dykhouse (10th - $14,218) and Gary Loeffler (7th - $15,403).

HPT Canterbury Park is set to conclude Monday, so be sure to check back on Tuesday for the final table results.

Al defeated Dr. Gary “Lambo” Lambert in heads-up play, though the latter’s performance gave him the lead in HPT’s race for Player of the Year. “I’m going to do all the HPT tournaments I can,” said Lambert, who took fourth at HPT’s St. Louis stop, “My heart is with HPT . . . We’ll definitely see you in Chicago for your next event.”

Poker Politics

California Tribes Oppose Online Poker Bill

Last Wednesday, the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations (TASIN) wrote a letter that stated it is “strongly opposed” to SB 1463, a piece of Senate Legislation that would legalize online poker. TASIN opposes the bill, which it says has a “fundamental disregard for the unique government-to-government relationship between the State and California’s tribal governments.”

The bill, which was authored by State Senator Rod Wright (D-Los Angeles) and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) and introduced in February, is estimated to generate around $200 million if passed.

TASIN also called the current version of the bill a “blanket waiver of tribal sovereign immunity” and states that it “is not acceptable” that the bill allows for games other than poker after two years. SB 1463 has yet to face a committee hearing.

Antigua & Barbuda vs. USA

Last week, the World Trade Organization (WTO) held a meeting where Antigua & Barbuda and the United States hoped to reach an amicable resolution in a long-term online gambling dispute. Unfortunately, that meeting resulted in no progress and had each side blaming the other for the lack of progress.

The dispute harkens back to 2007 when the U.S. began modified the General Agreement on Trade in Services schedule, changes that Antigua & Barbuda objected to. Then, in 2008, the WTO backed Antigua’s request to level some sanctions, but though no actions were taken.

According to the Antigua Observer, Antigua & Barbuda presented a letter to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body last week, one that alleges the U.S. is “continuing to criminally prosecute Antiguan-based remote gaming service providers for providing services to consumers in the United States and refusing to negotiate over the matter.”

The letter states that the U.S. needs to “observe its international obligations in good faith and with due consideration for the rights of Antigua & Barbuda.” In response, the U.S. has told the WTO that while it has accepted the results of the dispute settlement, Antigua & Barbuda are responsible for the stalemate.

Schleswig-Holstein Awards Three Online Gaming Licenses; Betfair Benefits

On Thursday, Schleswig-Holstein awarded three online gambling licenses. In September, the German state voted to allow sports betting and online poker as long as the sites were established in the European Union.

Betfair was awarded a license for sports betting, as was mybet, a subsidiary of Jaxx AG, and the state lottery. The licenses are valid until 2018.

"We view this as a significant positive for the company [Betfair], given that it further erodes the bear case on the stock that Betfair would be unable to get licensed outside of the UK," said analysts at BarCap.

Ohio and Minnesota Changing Poker Legislation

On Wednesday, an Ohio State Senate panel added provisions into a sweeping bill on casino regulations that would allow state counties in Ohio the ability to open up charity poker rooms, the Associated Press reported.

The government reform and oversight committee put the amendment into a bill that would reach the senate floor next week. If the bill passes, all 88 Ohio counties will be allowed to open charity poker rooms. Senate President Tom Niehaus said that the new charity poker rooms should not cut into the profits of the four new casinos is Ohio. There is currently only one charity poker room in Ohio.

Minnesota is also expanding its gambling industry as well as both houses of the Minnesota legislature passed an amendment Tuesday that would allow the maximum number of table games at the Canterbury Park as well as Running Aces Harness Park to be increased from 50 to 80, as well as a raise in betting limits from $60 to $100. For poker fans, the number of tournaments and tournament tables that the tracks will be able to run will now be unlimited.

The rules for many of the table games will change from “player-banked games,” to being “house-banked games.” Meaning that players will no longer compete against each other, but they will play against the house. This bit of the legislation is similar to the way Native American casinos and other casinos operate, but it remains to be seen how it will affect cash game players in Minnesota, as even though the measure takes effect immediately after it is signed, it will see a bit of lag before its implementation.

The Daily Racing Form has more on Minnesota's legislation, and you can find more regarding Ohio's charity poker rooms on WKYC.com.

Mike Sexton Calls For Change

Should poker players be forced to adhere to dress codes at televised events? Hall of Famer Mike Sexton thinks so — and he's not alone.

Sexton took to his blog on Wednesday to discuss a number of issues he believes need to be addressed in the poker community. The always-dapper Sexton says he's "disgusted" with the lack of professionalism by some poker pros who live in their "own little worlds."

"At a recent WPT final table, I looked at the six finalists and saw four wearing T-shirts and another in a sweat shirt," wrote Sexton. "At other final tables this season, I’ve seen players wearing shorts and flip-flops. Look, I played poker for a living for a long time. I understand wanting to be comfortable while you’re playing, etc. Is it too much, however, to expect players to wear collared shirts, long pants, and shoes and socks on a televised final table?"

Sexton's blog echoes the opinions stated by Matt Glantz in a blog titled Responsibility in Poker. Glantz singled out the "young guns" of poker who need to take more responsibility for their actions which ultimately reflect poorly on the entire community.

Layoffs at Bodog

Reports surfaced early this week that around 70 employees had been laid off by Bodog. On Wednesday, Bodog confirmed those reports to PokerNews, citing the moves as part of a restructuring effort in the U.K.

“In the U.K. we have undertaken a long period of market analysis and we are now starting to adapt our product to fall in line with those findings," a Bodog representative told PokerNews on Wednesday. "We feel we now have a better understanding of what the U.K. customer wants and the focus now is on re-structuring our business to be better placed to put that information into practice.”

It's been a long, trying year for Bodog. In March, the company shut down its operations in Costa Rica after its founder Calvin Ayre was indicted for money laundering and operating an illegal gambling enterprise in the U.S. Ayre set up Bodog headquarters in Costa Rica, where the company handled billions in online gambling transactions. All Costa Rica-based employees were let go and assured they would be given their full proper severance, according to CalvinAyre.com

Montreal Dominating GPI Player of the Year Race

Jonathan Duhamel hasn't cashed in a tournament in over a month, but the former world champ still maintained his big lead in the Global Poker Index Player of the Year standings this week. The award, which is presented by PokerNews, honors the player who has the strongest performance in live tournaments during the calendar year, according to the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

Duhamel holds a sizable lead over his good friend Samuel Chartier, who jumped seven spots to No. 2 in the rankings this week. Chartier made his fifth final table of 2012 at the Irish Open in Dublin, taking seventh place for $58,625. Despite many deep runs this year, the Montreal native is still seeking his first live win.

Also on the move this week was Andrew Badecker. The American pro had a successful trip to Europe this month, taking 19th in the Irish Open and then 14th in the World Poker Tour Vienna Main Event. Badecker moved up 10 spots to No. 3 in the rankings. He was followed by Erik Cajelais and Bruno Lopes, respectively.

The message reads as follows:

Betsson to Acquire NordicBet

The online gaming world saw another major acquisition take place on Wednesday. Swedish gaming company Betsson announced it has purchased rival gaming provider Nordic Gaming Group (NGG) for an initial price of €65 million, giving Betsson ownership of brands such as NordicBet, Tobet and Triobet.

Betsson says it is acquiring NGG from a number of individuals, including both the founders of the company, members of management and employees, as well as from external investors.

“Through this transaction, Betsson continues to strengthen its Nordic operations and its leading position amongst the private gaming company alternatives in the Nordic region,” said Betsson President and CEO Magnus Silfverberg. “In addition, Betsson's brand portfolio is strengthened significantly within the betting segment, as NGG receives approximately fifty percent of its revenues from sportsbook.”

The announcement comes just a few days after Unibet purchased Bet24. Unlike that deal, in which Unibet plans to re-brand Bet24’s products, NordicBet will continue its day-to-day operations under its existing name.

Massachusetts Lawmaker Pushes for Online Poker

Nevada, New Jersey, California, and Delaware are currently in the process of developing intrastate online poker platforms. Is Massachusetts next?

On Thursday, the Boston Herald reported that Rep. Dan Winslow is urging Massachusetts to create three licenses for intrastate internet poker. Winslow is promoting the idea that online poker will infuse revenue and new jobs into the state. He hopes the recent Department of Justice opinion on the Wire Act will allow his plan to gain traction before Congress breaks for recess.

The Herald reports that each license would require a minimum $10 million, and operators would pay a 25 percent tax on proceeds.

"Internet poker is a game of skill that fits our high tech job profile perfectly,” Winslow said in a statement, according to the Herald. "We can create new, high paying tech jobs by leading the launch of this new industry in the United States."

The Boston Herald has more.

AGCC Hearing on Full Tilt Poker License

Laurent's Tapie's goal to re-launch Full Tilt Poker by the end of this month may have been a pipe dream. But his vision might not be far off.

Over the past few months, Tapie has been working with the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) to resurrect FTP's operating license. On Thursday, the AGCC set a public hearing for a Category 2 license application submitted by Full Tilt Poker subsidiary Orinic Limited. Orinic had its non-operating Category 1 license suspended for six months last year. A Category 2 license would allow the new Full Tilt Poker to operate a gambling business.

The hearing will take place on Thursday, May 3 at the Braye Beach Hotel in Alderney.

With the pending deal between Groupe Bernard Tapie and FTP growing closer by the day, many are wondering what Full Tilt Poker will look like under new management. Daniel Negreanu gave his take on the latest news over at Full Contact Poker on Thursday.

For more on the license hearing, check out the story at PokerNews.com.

Advantage: PokerStars

The legal battle between PokerStars and data-mining website PokerTableRatings.com has apparently come to a close. On Wednesday, Poker Table Ratings announced in a blog that it will fully comply with the cease and desist order issued by PokerStars. All PokerStars player profiles and statistics have been removed from the website, and searches are met with the following message:

“Stars has requested that you not view your poker player profile on PokerTableRatings.com. Please contact Stars support if you would like to see your profile made public again on PTR.”

The decision ends a multi-year war between the two sides. PTR tracked millions of hands on PokerStars and provided data that gives its users an advantage at the online poker table. After it failed to block PTR's data mining at a technical level, PokerStars enforced legal action against PTR, which resulted in the decision to adhere to the cease-and-desist order.

Judge Accepts John Campos' Guilty Plea

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan accepted the guilty plea of Utah banker John Campos, one of the 11 men indicted by the Department of Justice on Black Friday. Campos pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor bank gambling charge last month, but Kaplan refused to accept the plea until the prosecution explained why they let Campos plead guilty to a misdemeanor rather than a felony.

The judge accepted the plea agreement after prosecutors submitted a letter saying Campos' involvement in illegal online poker transactions was minor. Campos was facing six charges and up to 35 years in prison, but he entered a last-second plea agreement with prosecutors in March.

Campos is the sixth Black Friday defendant to enter a guilty plea. The others are Absolute Poker co-founder Brent Beckley and payment processors Ira Rubin, Ryan Lang, Bradley Franzen, and Chad Elie, who was set to go to trial with Campos this month.

Poker Tournaments

Introducing iSeriesLIVE

Degens are in for a real treat as Poker Royalty has announced its new poker series: iSeriesLIVE.

iSeriesLIVE will be a groundbreaking new concept whereby fans will be able to bet on the action as it’s happening. The series will include some of the game's top pros, including Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Maria Ho and Carlos Mortensen, facing off in a number of different tournament formats.

Viewers will be able to follow live hole-cam feeds online while they bet on the action. The real gamblers out there will even be able to bet on red or black flops. All betting will be done online through sportsbook giant PaddyPower.

For the entire series, the pros will be without cell phones or outside access to Internet, so there will be no way for them to check out the feeds themselves. The first event is set to take place on April 5 at 1700 GMT (1300 EST).

Poker Legislation

Another One Bites the Dust

On Tuesday, Hawaii Representatives Joseph Souki and Angus McKelvey told PokerNews that a group of bills aimed at legalizing online gambling in Hawaii have been put to rest, temporarily ending the state's hopes for an online poker platform.

Earlier this year, House Bill 2422 was introduced in the Hawaii state legislature. The bill intended to create an Internet lottery and gaming corporation, and the state-run lottery would then be authorized to offer games of chance and games of skill, including poker and casino games, on the Internet.

The bill, which was co-sponsored by Representatives Souki, McKelvey, and Faye Hanohano, failed to advance in the legislature.

Hawaii and Utah remain the only two states without any form of gambling. While Hawaii has made efforts to legalize the activity, Utah has been strongly opposed to any gambling measure. Rep. Stephen Sandstrom recently introduced a bill intended to prevent online gaming in Utah if and when the U.S. Congress legalizes online gaming.

Hawaii, Mississippi, Iowa and the District of Columbia have failed to pass online gaming measures this year. Washington, D.C. was the first U.S. jurisdiction to approve and operate a Web wagering system, but the legislation was repealed last month.

U.K. Changes Gambling Tax

In an attempt to encourage offshore operators to return to the United Kingdom, chancellor George Osborne announced Wednesday that online betting operators around the world will be forced to pay taxes on gross pro?ts generated from customers based in the U.K.

The U.K. tax regime currently in place allows offshore gambling operators like Ladbrokes and William Hill to avoid paying duties. The new system will enforce taxes on a point of consumption, meaning operators will no longer benefit from their offshore locations.

“Ninety percent of online gambling consumed by our citizens is now supplied from outside the UK, and the remaining UK operations are under pressure to leave," the chancellor said. “This is clearly not fair — and not a sensible way to support jobs in Britain."

It's important to note that the new tax regime will not affect online poker players in the U.K. who do not pay any tax on winnings.

Poker Business

Tzvetkoff to Testify

The Australian entrepreneur accused of bringing down online poker in the U.S. is set to testify in the trial of two Black Friday principals.

Daniel Tzvetkoff, whose company InstaBill processed more than $1 billion in illegal online poker transactions in the U.S., is set to appear as a witness in the trial of John Campos and Chad Elie on April 9 in New York. The 29-year-old businessman was facing up to 75 years in prison after his arrest in Las Vegas in 2010, but he struck a plea bargain with prosecutors and provided vital evidence incriminating PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker. He has since been living in hiding under FBI protection as the star informant in the case.

According to the Australian Associated Press, Tzvetkoff has handed more than 90,000 documents over to prosecutors, including confidential emails to and from Elie, a former business partner. Elie is facing up to 85 years in prison on nine charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, money laundering and violating the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Campos, meanwhile, could spend 35 years in jail on six charges.

FTP, PokerStars and AP Given More Time to Respond

While the world continued waiting for the pending deal between Groupe Bernard Tapie and Full Tilt Poker to be completed this week, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York granted another extension to FTP and other respondents of an amended civil complaint regarding last April's Black Friday indictments.

After the previous deadline of March 19 passed, PokerStars, Absolute Poker, Howard Lederer, Ray Bitar, Rafe Furst and payment processor Chad Elie were given until May 14, 2012, file a response. The extension is another on a growing list since the respondents’ original response date of the indictment passed on Nov. 30, 2011.

Adios, Bodog

Bodog was back in the news this week after announcing that it is exiting the Spanish market ahead of the country's new gambling market. The company released a statement to players in Spain about the decision:

“We would like to inform you that due to recent regulatory changes, we are no longer able to offer our betting or wagering services to residents of Spain or Spanish territories. Your account will be disabled on the 31st of March 2012 and as of today; you are no longer able to make any further deposits to your account.”

The new gambling regulations in Spain are expected to go into effect later this year. More than 60 companies have applied for operating licenses. Among the online poker rooms interested in the space include PokerStars, bwin.party, 888 and Ladbrokes. Groupe Bernard Tapie also reportedly submitted an application before the Dec. 14, 2011, deadline.

Poker Players

Doyle's Tales of the "Old Days"

It's no surprise that Doyle Brunson gets a lot of requests to tell tales of the "old days" of poker. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, most card games were held in back rooms and smoky pool halls where armed guards protected the players from intruders. The illegal games were often run by members of organized crime, and rules weren't always enforced. Obviously, poker has come a long way since then.

Brunson took to his blog on Thursday to recount the first of five times he was robbed at gunpoint. Brunson said he was 24 years old and playing games on a dangerous street in Fort Worth, Texas, when four gunmen posing as cops busted into the room and began pocketing his money.

"We were used to being arrested, taken down to the police station and paying a fine for gambling, then being released," Brunson recalls. "It was part of the risk of illegal poker, but when these guys started taking our money from the table and searching us for more, we realized those 'policemen' were really robbers."

According to Brunson, the armed guard protecting the game was thrown off by the police uniforms and dropped his gun, allowing the gunmen to escape with all of the money. "The robbers left and we never heard any more about them," he said. "On Exchange Avenue those type of things never got reported to the real police. We accepted it as part of the price of our lifestyle."

Another Viktim

Five days after blowing a massive lead against Isaac "philivey2694" Haxton, Viktor "Isildur1" Blom faced off against high-stakes regular Alex “Kanu7” Millar in the PokerStars SuperStar Showdown last Sunday.

Millar isn't well known outside of the high-stakes online realm but has fared well against some of the toughest competition in the game. Millar accepted Blom's challenge to play 2,500 hands of $100/200 no-limit hold'em on Sunday, but he handed over $37,687 to the Swede when the match was all over.

In the biggest (and sickest) hand of the match, Blom raised to $600 preflop and called Millar's $2,600 three-bet. The flop brought {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Millar fired 4,000 into the pot. Blom called, and the {5-Spades} fell on the turn. Millar led out again, this time for $11,500, and Blom put in a call. The {9-Diamonds} hit the river and Millar moved all in for his last $32,350. Blom decide to call and showed a meager {K-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for bottom pair, but Millar tabled just {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. The $100,900 pot gave Blom a lead he would never relinquish despite a late surge from Millar.

Blom is 9-4 in 13 SuperStar Showdown matches and boasts winnings of $534,090. Here's a look at his results since last December:

Daniel's Weekly Rant

This week, Daniel Negreanu opens his video blog with an explanation of iSeriesLIVE, a new project he's involved with. Something in this video blog was apparently enough to get Negreanu temporarily banned from the popular poker forum, TwoPlusTwo.
