Martins Adeniya

The 2011 World Poker Tour Prague continued on Saturday with Day 2 action from the largest European WPT event in history. The original field of 571 players, which created a €1,753,200 prize pool and surpassed the WPT Vienna from Season IX as the largest event ever, had been reduced to 124 players on Day 2. Casey Kastle began the day with the lead with 356,800 in chips. After an intense day of action, that field had been reduced to 62 players, with Martins Adeniya best positioned to capture the €450,000 first-place prize with 849,000 in chips.

Adeniya got off to a quick start on Day 2 as he eliminated a resilient foe in just the second level of the day. In that hand, Adeniya raised and was met with a three-bet by Michael Tureniec. Adeniya then four-bet, Tureniec moved all-in for 80,000, and Adeniya called with {A-}{A-}. Tureniec was way behind with {K-}{Q-} and failed to improve. Just like that, Adeniya was up to 310,000 and never looked back.

Obviously action was fierce at the Kings Casino in the Corinthian Hotel in Prague as the remaining field looked to make the top 63 and guarantee a payday. It didn’t take long for the eliminations to mount, with a laundry list of notables joining Tureniec on the rail including Martin Staszko, John Eames, James Akenhead, Bryn Kenney, Lukas Berglund, Toby Lewis, Eoghan O’Dea, and Steve O’Dwyer.

O’Dwyer pushed with big slick and resulted in a former WPT Champ, Mike Watson, taking over the chip lead. According to the WPT Live Reporting Team, Watson raised to 11,000 under the gun and O’Dwyer called from the hijack. Michael “Timex” McDonald was next to act in the cutoff and three-bet to 31,000, which prompted Watson to four-bet to 51,000. O’Dwyer responded by moving all-in for 250,500, McDonald folded, and Watson made the call for his tournament life.

Showdown
Watson: {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}
O’Dwyer: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

O’Dwyer held a quality hand, but he was in desperate need of an ace. Unfortunately, the board ran out {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{6-Spades}{K-Spades} and Watson took over the chip lead with 578,000. O’Dwyer was left with just 75,000 and was eliminated a few hands later after his {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} was cracked by Watson’s {K-Spades}{J-Hearts}, when the board ran out {10-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}.

It was a quick fall for O’Dwyer, made all the more painful by the proximity of the money bubble, which burst a short time later. Action folded to Thomas Frandsen in the small blind and he shoved all-in for 113,000. Yury Gulyy was in the big blind and called off his shorter stack of 90,000.

Showdown
Frandsen: {A-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Gulyy: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

Gulyy was in a dominating position and primed to double, but that all changed when the flop came down {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Neither the {J-Clubs} turn nor {6-Spades} river helped Gulyy and he became the official bubble boy, assuring the remaining 63 players a payday of at least €6,400.

Those who’ve made the money and advance to Day 3 include Grayson Ramage (83,000), Casey Kastle (120,000), Eugene Katchalov (120,000), Moritz Kranich (139,200), Jamie Rosen (383,000), and Karen Sarkisyan (743,000).

Day 3 will commence on Sunday at 1400 CET (0500 PST) as the remaining 62 players look to make the WPT final table. Be sure to return to PokerNews for the daily recap of the action

Casey Kastle

Day 1b of the 2011 World Poker Tour Prague took place on Friday. The second starting flight grew to 340 players, which put the event total up to 571. That meant the 2011 WPT Prague had become the largest European WPT in history, breaking the record set by WPT Vienna in Season IX. At the end of the day, 124 players remained and Casey Kastle led the way with 356,800 in chips.

According to the WPT Live Update Team, Kastle gained the chip lead thanks to a massive hand right at the end of the day against Michael Tureniec. Kastle moved all-in preflop and was called by Tureniec who held {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}. Kastle had {A-Hearts}{A-Spades} and held from there. He was all-in for around 170,000 and doubled, while Tureniec slipped to 100,000.

Olivier Busquet was one of the many players eliminated on the day and he went out early, during Level 4. Busquet did all he could to get Pavel Binar to put all the money in preflop. Busquet held pocket aces and Binar two kings. From there, Binar found a king on the flop and another one on the river to make quads against Busquet and send him packing.

Some other notable eliminations on the day were Shannon Shorr, Toby Lewis and Ivan Freitez.

Amongst those who were able to bag decent stacks on the day included Nikola Sears (262,800), Steve O'Dwyer (241,000), Martins Adeniya (205,000), Daniel Carter (143,200), Kevin Iacofano (133,400), Andrey Pateychuk (121,800), Tristan Clemencon (118,100), Manuel Bevand (108,000) and Eugene Katchalov (101,500).

The total prize pool created for the event was €1,753,200. The winner will receive €450,000 and the top 63 spots will be paid out. Just finishing into the money will earn a player at least €6,400. Reaching the final table will earn one €25,000.

Day 2 will commence on Saturday at 1400 CET (0500 PST). Be sure to return to PokerNews for the daily recap of the action

Stanislaw Kretz

Day 3 of the 2011 World Poker Tour Prague began with 63 players in the money and looking to reach a final table at the largest European event in WPT history. The €3,500 buy-in tournament began with 571 players, passing WPT Vienna from Season IX as the largest event ever, and the field was reduced to six by the time play ended on Sunday.

British pro Martins Adeniya led the way as Day 3 kicked off, but he and several other well-known pros hit the rail short of the final two tables. Mike "Timex" McDonald (63rd), Vinny Pahuja (62nd), Mohsin Charania (61st) and Eugene Katchalov (60th) were the first four players eliminated on Day 3. They were joined later by Casey Castle (38th), Chris McClung (27th) and Jamie Rosen (24th). Adeniya's stack had dwindled to just ten big blinds when his {8-Spades}{8-Clubs} couldn't outrun the {J-Clubs}{10-Hearts} of Russian pro Andrey Pateychuk. Adeniya departed in 19th place with €12,272.

While those players faltered, Germany's Stanislaw Kretz built a massive stack on Sunday to take control of the tournament. Kretz got a major boost when he flopped jacks full of eights against the always unpredictable McClung to scoop a 2 million chip pot, and he then eliminated Agris Klaise (13th), Tobias Reinkemeier (12th), Denis Pisarev (11th), Thomas Frandsen (8th), and Jan Bendik (7th) en route to the final table to finish the day with 6.3 million chips.

Kretz's next closest competitor was Benjamin Pollak, who finished Day 3 with 4,865,000. Pollak sent American Zachary Korik to the rail in 10th place when his pocket queens held up against Korik's {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, and he then coasted through the end of the day to earn his seat at the final table. Former WPT champion Mike Watson made his exit in ninth place at the hands of Pateychuk, and Kretz handled the rest of the dirty work to put an end to a long penultimate day in Prague.

Joining Kretz, Pollak and Pateychuk at the final table were Norway's Sigurd Eskeland, Spain's Adria Balaguer, and Canada's Russell "rdcrsn" Carson, one of the most accomplished online tournament players of all time. Carson entered the final table as the short stack, but he was just a double-up away from climbing back into contention for his first-ever major live victory (he took second place at the 2010 PokerStars European Poker Tour Snowfest Main Event for $424,000).

Pateychuk, meanwhile, was looking to build on an impressive year that had already seen him earn more than $1.4 million on the live circuit, including a victory at the PokerStars EPT San Remo Main Event and a 15th-place result at the World Series of Poker Main Event. Like Carson, Pateychuk is a feared online player under the moniker "ThePateychuk."

The WPT Prague final table began Monday at 1500 CET (0600 PST) with a live stream hosted by Jesse May and Olivier Busquet. Be sure to return to PokerNews on Tuesday to find out who won the top prize of €450,000.

Chris Moorman

The 2011 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour headed to Prague this week and Day 1a kicked off on Monday. The first of two starting flights brought out 234 runners, capped off by the very late entry of Bryn Kenney. At the end of the day, around 140 players remained. Topping them all was Vedzizhev Beslan with 132,200 chips.

Among those who came out to play were Team PokerStars' Toni Judet, Pat Pezzin, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Rino Mathis, Theo Jorgensen, Richard Toth, Marcin Horecki, Martin Staszko and Michael Keiner. Of that bunch, only Judet and Horecki failed to make it through the day.

Other notables taking their seats at the felt on Day 1a included Steve O'Dwyer, James Akenhead, Mike Watson, Chris Moorman, Eoghan O'Dea and Michael Benvenuti. They've all made it through the first gauntlet of levels and will be back for Day 2 on Wednesday.

O'Dea lost a big pot early in the day against Raffaele Gerbi. All of the money went in on the turn with O'Dea holding a straight. Gerbi held two pair and filled up on the river to crush O'Dea. The 2011 November Niner battled back though, including a big double through Christopher Brammer when his top pair held up on the {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop. O'Dea was set all-in by Brammer, who held {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs}. O'Dea had {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. After the {9-Hearts} turn and {7-Hearts} river, O'Dea was back with some barking chips at nearly double the starting stack. He finished on 50,800 in chips.

The biggest name in the field came out to play after a long hiatus from tournament poker. "The Great Dane," Gus Hansen, came sporting a banana and a Bible along with his poker face. Hansen kept his nose buried in his book most of the day and didn't play the normal loosey-goosey Hansen style that we're accustomed to seeing, but he managed to finish on 52,600 in chips.

The way it looks right now, this event should easily clear 600 runners total. Today's field surpassed the Day 1a field from last year and Day 1b should mirror that. On Tuesday, Day 1b will kick off at 1200 CET (0300 PST) for another eight levels of play.
