Bertrand Grospellier

Poker superstars gathered at the Aviation Club de France in Paris Wednesday for the 11th Annual European Poker Awards. Some of the game's brightest young stars were given hardware over the course of the evening, including Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Pius Heinz and Sam Trickett.

Trickett bested superstars like Grospellier, Heinz, Jake Cody, Eugene Katchalov and Andrey Pateychuk to win the "Player of the Year" award. He earned nearly $4.5 million on the tournament circuit in 2011, including victories at the Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge and the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event. Trickett was playing in the Aussie Millions cash game Wednesday and wasn't able to accept the award, but he was delighted to hear the news.

Samtrickett1 Sam Trickett Just found out i Won European Player of the Year! Thanks every1 for supporting me. Ur all legends :) January 25 2012

Although they didn't win the most coveted honor, Grospellier, Heinz and Pateychuk didn't walk away empty-handed. Grospellier, the hometown favorite, was honored with the "Poker Personality of 2011" award. The Frenchman won his first World Series of Poker bracelet in June to secure poker's elusive Triple Crown, but he also faced off against friend and fellow Team PokerStars Pro Lex Veldhuis in a kickboxing match and was very active in promoting poker both online and around the globe.

"It's my first personality award so that's why I'm really proud of it," Grospellier told PokerNews reporter Laura Cornelius Wednesday evening. "It feels really good to be recognized because the past few years I've tried to be a better ambassador for the game."

Heinz, of course, was honored with the "Best Tournament Performance" award after becoming the first German player to win the WSOP Main Event in November. Heinz won more than $8.7 million.

Pateychuk was named "Rookie of the Year" after winning two legs of the Triple Crown in less than two months. Pateychuk took down the PokerStars EPT San Remo Main Event in October for $875,470, and then won the World Poker Tour Prague Main Event in December for another $630,000. The 21-year-old also made a deep run in the 2011 WSOP Main Event, taking 15th place for $478,174.

"This prize is very important to me and I'm very glad to get it," Pateychuk told PokerNews. "I hope this year I'll be able to win a WSOP bracelet and finish my Triple Crown. That is a big goal of mine."

Other winners on Wednesday were Ilari Sahamies (Online Player of the Year), Natalia Nikitina (Europe’s Leading Lady), Warren Lush (Staff Person of the Year), and the WSOP Cannes (Event of the Year).

In addition, poker commentator Jesse May was honored with the "Lifetime Achievement Award." May, who has been involved in more than a dozen poker television series, joined the likes of Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott, John Duthie, Thomas Kremser, Marcel Luske, Bruno Fitoussi and Nic Szeremeta in being recognized for their achievements in the game.

Poker King Club in Macau

Move over Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio and Ivey’s Room at Aria, the high-stakes action seems to have found a new home half a world away at StarWorld’s Poker King Club in Macau. As reported last week, a mammoth HKD$10,000/HKD$20,000 ($1,300/$2,600) no-limit hold’em game was held at StarWorld's Poker King Club. It drew a mix of Chinese businessmen and poker’s top professionals, including Phil Ivey, Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Guy Laliberte, Johnny Chan, Andrew “good2cu” Robl, and Sam Trickett.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, the game was back, albeit at HKD$5,000/HKD$10,000 blinds, and two familiar names emerged victorious in Dwan and Trickett. According to pokerportal.asia, it was the latter who walked away the big winner, banking HKD$14 million, or roughly USD$1.8 million.

While we don’t know the specifics of the win, we do know that Trickett has been putting in the hours. According to his Twitter:

Trickett1986 Sam Trickett it's sick how long the games run for here! played 20 hours and had to leave, was a bit jet lagged, sometime i wish humans didnt have to sleep. November 30 2011

Alas, Trickett was not looking to break any record, so he eventually quit a winner, a decision that wasn’t made lightly:

Trickett1986 Sam Trickett Feel ill,so had to quit the game, feel more ill about that...! December 04 2011

On Dec. 2, the game spread yet again with Ivey and Dwan joined by a mix of Chinese businessmen and Winfred Yu, a regular at the Poker King Club. At the same time, a HKD$5,000/HKD$10,000 pot-limit Omaha game was spread and saw Chan and Robl pull up a seat.

Another man who took a seat in the big game was the president of the Asian Poker Tour, Tom Hall, who is one of the few people to reveal precious details about the game. For the past year, Hall has posted on and off in the TwoPlusTwo forums regarding the poker scene in Macau, and the big game is no exception. On Dec. 1, Hall posted the following:

Phil Ivey in Macau. Picture courtesy of the Poker King Club. Phil Ivey in Macau. Picture courtesy of the Poker King Club.

"Well going back to Hong Kong after a short and unfortunately losing session. Playing 5k, 10k blinds. Was up, then got stacked. Tom Dwan and Sam Trickett were in the game with myself and the regulars and both doing well. Got durrrred once on the river by Mr. Dwan in a pretty big pot, luckily took insurance that saved me. I overshoved with middle set and got called by tom with a big flush draw and he got there on the river. Fun evening though, Sam is running on pure red bull I think."

As one of the few sources willing to talk about the big game, Hall’s updates are precious, indeed. In fact, it was Hall who quickly dismissed rumors of a $100 Million tournament in Macau, calling it a publicity grab.

Unfortunately, poker fans will have to look elsewhere for updates on Macau, at least for a bit. “Johnny was there but wasn't playing when I was in the game. The table said Phil was playing PLO at Wynn Casino,” Hall said on TwoPlusTwo. “Am off traveling for a while now so will leave to somebody else to update on Macau.”

It was also on this day that the Poker King Club published a picture to their Facebook page showing Ivey in action. They also took the time to respond to a fan who inquired whether or not Patrik Antonius had been banned: “Please don’t spread rumors that Patrik [has] been banned. It’s totally not true.”

The Big Game in Macau is an enduring saga, and PokerNews will be here to bring you any details as they develop.

Pius Heinz

This just in: Pius Heinz and Sam Trickett have heaps of money. Okay, that's not breaking news, but both players saw their bankrolls grow considerably in the past week. We explain why in this edition of the Nightly Turbo.

In Case You Missed It

Aaron Kanter took fourth place in the 2005 WSOP Main Event. What has he been up to lately? We caught up with Kanter to find out in the latest edition of Where Are They Now.

How did Team PokerStars Pro member Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier become the player he is today? Find out in the latest edition of the Seat Open With series.

How did the Sunday Majors play out on PokerStars? Who took home the biggest win? Find out in the Sunday Briefing.

We all know what poker players do on the felt, but what about "normal" life? In the latest from the Off the Felt series, we talk to Joe Sebok about prop bets, his charity work, and more.

No Tax on Heinz

Pius Heinz collected $8.7 million for winning the World Series of Poker Main Event last week. How much of that will be taxed by his native country of Germany? None, according to Russ Fox of Clayton Financial and Tax.

CNBC sports analyst Darren Rovell tweeted a story by Fox that breaks down the tax situation for each of the 2011 November Niners. Fox says that Heinz benefits from the U.S.-Germany Tax Treaty, under which gambling income earned is "exempt from U.S. taxation." And, since Germany considers gambling to be a use of after-tax money, Heinz will keep all of his $8,715,638 in winnings.

Not a bad deal, considering 2008 champ Peter Eastgate handed over a reported 73 percent of his winnings to his native Denmark. Of his $9.1 million score, Eastgate took home less than $3 million.

A chart by Fox shows that $5.4 million of the $28.2 million awarded at the 2011 Main Event final table is considered taxable income. That's a total tax bite of 18.91 percent. Last year, the total tax bite at the final table was nearly 43 percent, but Fox notes that every player at the 2010 final table was subject to taxation.

Sam Trickett Wins Again

Move over Devilfish. There's a new king of poker in the United Kingdom.

Sam Trickett became Britain's all-time tournament money leader after winning the 2011 Partouche Poker Tour Main Event on Sunday. The 25-year-old pro collected €1,000,000 for the victory, moving him past Dave "Devilfish" Ulliott as the biggest winner in the country's history.

Trickett entered the final table as the chip leader and fought his way through a tough lineup that included Mads Wissing, Roger Hairabedian and WSOP bracelet winner Oleksii Kovalchuk. Trickett found himself heads-up with American Salman Behbehani for the title and overcame a two-to-one chip disadvantage to claim his second title of 2011. In January, Trickett won a High Roller Event at the Aussie Millions, and took second place in a Super High Roller event just five days later. His career earnings have now eclipsed $6 million, with more than $4.6 million coming this year alone.

Here's a look at the final results of the 2011 Partouche Poker Tour Main Event:

Feldman, Dempsey Lead PartyPoker Premier League

It turned out to be a great weekend at the tables for the U.K. The PartyPoker Premier League Mixed Game Championships kicked off Sunday at the Playboy Club London and a pair of British pros all but secured spots in the final after victories in their first heat.

James Dempsey and Andrew Feldman earned 16 points by winning their first tables as both players used their "double up" card, which doubles a player's points and can be used once during the three heats. Tony G, Luke Schwartz, Ben Carpenter and Sorel Mizzi also used their double up cards in the first heat, but none were able to place in the top two at their respective tables.

Matt Giannetti and Andy Frankenberger collected six points each for their runner-up finishes in Heat 1. Schwartz collected four points and sits in third behind Dempsey and Giannetti in Group A, and Carpenter is third in Group B with four points of his own. The top three in each group will reach the final for a shot at the $100,000 top prize.

Jennifer Tilly, playing in her first PartyPoker Premier League, scored zero points in Heat 1. Tilly told Craig Ferguson last week that she wants to quit playing poker, but she spoke with the PartyPoker Blog about those comments during a break in play on Sunday:

Aussie Banks Opposed to Online Gambling Boundaries

The Australian Bankers' Association has informed the Australian government that a recent bill intended to clamp down on forbidden Internet gambling sites would be extremely difficult to enforce. The ABA and credit card company Visa stated they don't want restrictions placed on Internet gambling because it could interfere with unrelated transactions such as online shopping.

''(If) Australia was identified as a jurisdiction where payment obligations may not be fulfilled in a certain and timely manner, it is possible that merchants and online service providers will refuse to accept business and payments from customers designated as originating from Australia,'' ABA CEO Steven Munchenberg told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The bill, introduced by Senator Nick Xenophon, is meant to have a similar effect to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in the United States. Under Australia's current Interactive Gambling Act, it is illegal for online gambling operators to accept payments from Australian players. However, it is estimated Australians spent nearly $1 billion last year on illegal online casino, poker and bingo sites.

More on this story can be found at the Sydney Morning Herald.

Judicial Bias Alleged in Phil Ivey Divorce Case

The drama surrounding the world's greatest poker player added a new chapter this week. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Phil Ivey's ex-wife has reportedly filed a petition with the Nevada Supreme Court claiming that there may have been bias involved in the original judgment of the couple's 2009 divorce.

Luciaetta Ivey claims that a $5,000 contribution was made by Ivey to Family Court Judge Bill Gonzalez three months after the divorce was finalized. The petition says that Ivey didn't make any other contribution to another Family Court Judge, and Luciaetta told the Review-Journal that she was "blindsided" when she discovered the donations.

Nevada to Take Applications in February for Internet Poker Licenses

Nevada poker players received good news last week as a source told VegasInc.com that Nevada’s Gaming Control Board will begin accepting applications in February from companies seeking licenses to operate online poker sites.

Gaming Control Board chairman Mark Lipparelli told industry professionals attending U.S. Online Gaming Law conference at Aria last Thursday that the license process would be quicker for companies already holding licenses in Nevada, and that operators would only be permitted to allow games to residents within the state border. Any online site would be off-limits to U.S. residents outside of Nevada.

Said Lipparelli, "We’ve taken our brick-and-mortar operational standards to a new level. We’re going to continue to be flexible, but we think we’ve set the bar high for licensing and suitability.”

World Poker Tour Season X to Feature Eight Main Events in 2012

Season X of the World Poker Tour is nearing the midway point, and there will be no shortage of WPT stops around the globe in 2012. The tour will be hosting eight Main Events next year, both domestic and international, culminating with the WPT World Championship in May.

The WPT will be hosting a new event in Dublin, Ireland, in January, followed by a return visit to Venice, Italy in February. The last of European stops will be in Vienna, Austria, in March. Last year, the series in Vienna set the record for the largest field at the WPT Main Event in Europe.

Season X will also include its regular trip to California for the Los Angeles Poker Classic and Bay 101 Shooting Star events. The WPT then travels to Florida for the second-ever Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown and the debut WPT tournament in the brand new Jacksonville Poker Room.

A full list of the 2012 WPT schedule can be found at PokerNews.com.

Sam Trickett

You might have been discussing the Emmy's best dressed at the water cooler Monday morning, but that's over with and the "difference between tuxedos" conversation will have to wait until the next big awards show. What are you going to talk about on Tuesday? You could discuss Hendon Mob dumping Full Tilt Poker, Sam Trickett leading the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event, or anything else you read about in the Nightly Turbo.

In Case You Missed It

The Emergency Arts recently opened in downtown Las Vegas. In the latest episode of the Sin City Series, Sarah Grant heads over to the former Freemont Medical Center to find out what it's all about.

The World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open kicked off on Sunday. To find out who topped the Day 1a chip counts, you're going to have to check out our WPT recap.

Even with the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker running, most of the Sunday Majors are still attracted big attendance numbers. The Sunday Briefing has the results.

On Day 15 of the 2011 World Championship of Online Poker Daniel Negreanu made a deep run in Event #41. Did he win it? Find out in our Day 15 WCOOP recap.

We all know what poker players do on the felt, but what about "normal" life? In the latest from the Off the Felt series, we talk to Jordan Young about moving to Canada, what he'd be doing if he weren't playing poker, and more.

It's Not Us, It's You

On Sunday, The Hendon Mob announced that it severed its exclusive relationship with Full Tilt Poker. On top of that, the players who make up The Hendon Mob have ended their affiliation as Full Tilt Red Pros.

"We are well aware that a great deal of players including many who signed through The Hendon Mob still have money on FTP, as well as steps tickets, player points etc. going forward, and in any scenario where Full Tilt Poker resumes trading, we will as an affiliate continue to look out for the interests of our players and to try to achieve the best possible outcome regarding their funds. We do not take the loyalty of our community for granted," said the statement.

"The Hendon Mob employs a sizable staff of full and part time people who are dedicated to maintaining and improving the database, the forum and everything else that the poker community expects from our website. We are currently running at a substantial loss and this is not sustainable in the long term," The Hendon Mob explained in its statement.

Partouche Poker Tour Final Table Set

The final table of the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event is set. After five days of play, Sam Trickett is sitting on top of the chip counts with nine players left. We'll just add this to Trickett's year of awesomeness. The Brit has racked up over $3 million in tournament earnings so far this year.

When Day 5 began, 18 players took their seats in hopes of making it into the final nine. Among those who were eliminated included Juha Helppi (15th) and Will Failla, who, after being eliminated in 14th place, hopped on a flight to Borgata for the World Poker Tour. Ludovic Lacay came close to making a final table appearance, but was sent to the rail in 11th place.

When Emile Petit was eliminated in 10th place, play was halted. The final nine players will all return for the Partouche Poker Tour's "November Nine" on Nov. 12.

Team PokerStars Online Welcomes Vivian Im

PokerStars’ Team Online roster seems to be getting tougher each and every week. Last week, it was announced that Mickey "mement_mori" Petersen would be sporting PokerStars’ red spade, and today another online luminary joined their ranks. Vivan Im, a dance artist by trade, is the latest member of Team PokerStars Online and will play under the screen name "Vivian Im."

"I am very happy that since I have played majority of the time online that this will give me the opportunity to play on more offline events," Im said. "I look forward to traveling and playing in many major tournaments."

Im burst onto the poker scene this year when she took down the APPT Cebu, followed by a second-place finish in a Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon Main Event. Interestingly, Im owes her poker success to another member of Team PokerStars, Betrand "ElkY" Grospellier, who ran into Im’s boyfriend on the Starcraft circuit, told him of his poker success, and later had it related to Im.

"If it wasn't for him I probably would have never known about poker and definitely not be in this position right now," Im said. "He still teaches me many things and does not hesitate to give advices on my plays."

To learn more about Im, be sure to check out the PokerStars Blog.

Internet Poker Amendment Passes in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a casino gambling bill last Wednesday, that just so happened to include provisions for Internet poker. The bill could bring three casinos to the state, while the amendment, proposed by State Rep. Daniel Winslow, allows up to five Internet poker companies to operate within the state.

In a statement, Winslow stated: "This amendment was aimed at creating high-tech job opportunities in Massachusetts, as well as increased local aid revenue. It is important to remember that 1,700 foreign companies already offer Internet poker, so state regulation will ensure that consumers are not being cheated."

After passing through the House, the bill will now make its way to the state Senate.
