Full Tilt Poker

On Friday, Full Tilt Poker announced on PokerStrategy.com that an acquisition agreement was signed with the Bernard Tapie Group. This comes just one day after the Alderney Gambling Control Commission revoked Full Tilt Poker's license.

The announcement was made by Laurent Tapie, managing director of the Bernard Tapie Group.

Laurent Tapie is the son of Bernard Tapie, a French businessman and politician. Bernard Tapie is credited with rebuilding a number of bankrupt companies and making them profitable. His most famous is Adidas, which he owned from 1990 to 1993. He also owned a cycling team that won the Tour de France twice and a soccer club that won the French Championship five times in a row, as well as the Champions League in 1993. Bernard Tapie's record isn't only littered with wins. In 1993, he was accused of fixing a match between his soccer club and another, for which he served a seven-month prison sentence. Tapie was also convicted of tax fraud and was sued by his banker for repayment of a $240 million loan.

Reprinted below is the press release in full:

Full Tilt Poker and Groupe Bernard Tapie Sign Acquisition Agreement

Dublin, Ireland (September 30, 2011) Laurent Tapie, Managing Director of Groupe Bernard Tapie announced today that the group has signed an exclusive agreement with the Board of Directors of Full Tilt Poker to acquire the company and all of its associated assets.

This agreement, which includes the repayment of Full Tilt Poker’s world-wide players in full, is subject to several conditions; the first of which is a favorable resolution with the United States Department of Justice. Discussions with the United States Department of Justice will begin immediately.

Groupe Bernard Tapie has over 30 years of experience in the salvation of financially distressed businesses, with over 40 companies acquired and managed to profitability, the most well-known being the sport equipment giant, Adidas.

Updated 9:45 a.m. PDT: Laurent Tapie granted an exclusive interview with iGaming France to discuss the acquisition of Full Tilt Poker. According to iGaming France, the agreement includes "repayment of Full Tilt Poker's world-wide players in full, and is subject to several conditions; the first of which is a favorable resolution with the United States Department of Justice."

Tapie didn't disclose how much money the acquisition would cost his company, but did say he "wouldn't have undertaken such a project if he didn't believe in its potential."

He also told iGaming France, "We have shown that we have the funds necessary to repay player debts. We want to find ways where we don’t have to put in all the money and will be talking to the US Department of Justice next week."

It seems Tapie believes in the Full Tilt Poker brand and said he would keep it. "The brand is not in question, it’s a well-known brand and the technology is widely recognized as being possibly the best in the industry. The management of the company is being questioned and it will be changed (should the takeover be concluded). I believe we have the tools necessary to once again make the site one of the leaders in the online poker sector."

According to iGaming France, he hopes to have the site reopened by Jan. 2012.

Latin American Poker Tour

Next month, the PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour will make its way to the Colombian city of Medellin for the first time. Despite the years of conflict we’ve heard about on the news, Colombia is now a safe place to visit, particularly Medellin, which Lonely Planet describes as "the jewel in the crown of Colombia."

That may have something to do with its perfect climate of a permanent springtime and mass amounts of greenery laced throughout a bustling city filled with skyscrapers, restaurants, museums and nightlife, all surrounded by rugged peaks with stunning views wherever you look. In fact, a local law requires new buildings to include public art within the construction, so Medellin now has the funky vibe of an outdoor art gallery. Then, of course, there is the country’s most famous, finest-quality exports: coffee and women. Sold yet?

Vitals

Exchange Rate: Colombian Pesos (Col$)? — Col$1,737 = USD$1Weather: Shorts and a t-shirt by day, pants and a sweater by night, and that’s at anytime of the year.Tax on Winnings: 20% of winnings over Col$1,206,000 (USD$635) will be withheld by the Colombian government. Official receipts will be issued.

Getting There & Around

The Jose Cordoba International Airport is a scenic, 40-minute ride from the city. There is no tax upon arrival into Colombia, but one must be paid in cash upon departure and can vary in price depending on whether your airline ticket included the tax or not. We suggest having at least USD$40 in cash available, just in case.

Taxis are quite cheap, so getting around isn’t too difficult. Although with all of the beautiful nature around, why not rent a bicycle to take it all in? The mountain roads around the city fill up with local bikers on the weekends — joining them would be a great way to release any bad-beat tension!

Medellin also has a rare mode of transport for a non-ski town — the Metrocable. It’s a cheap gondola lift system that takes you across the top of the city and out to the further suburbs. It runs 20 hours a day and taking it at night when the city is lit up is said to be stunning. Certainly an innovative way to get around!

Latin American Poker Tour

The LAPT Main Event will be held at Casino Allegre? from Oct. 13 through 16. Also, be aware that the High Roller event coincides with the Main Event Final Table.

Casino Allegre

If you were lucky enough to secure a PokerStars satellite package to this event, then you will be issued five nights' worth of accommodation in one of the following hotels:

Hotel Intercontinental Medellin ?

Conditions do apply to the packaged accommodation, so for more information or for any hotel-related query, please email info@lapttravel.com.

As always, a cocktail party will be held on the eve of the Main Event to welcome players to Medellin, the location is still to be confirmed, but consider yourself warned to keep the night of Oct. 12 free! Transport will be supplied from the above-mentioned hotels.

Exploring

When you’re busy crushing a poker tournament, we understand that you will be limited for time to explore a city of over 3 million residents. Here are few things to do, as well as a day trip suggestion, you know, just in case the nature of poker forces you into having a few extra days to spare than planned.

Bare Foot Park (Parque de los Pies Descalzos)

Almost every corner of Medellin has a park of some sort, but this one is unique. Here, you’re required to take off your shoes for a refreshing walk along the small rocks through a bamboo forest, along the sand, and even do some climbing on stone pillars. There are fountains shooting cold water to cool down on a hot day, or you can chose to sit in the shade and escape from the bustle of the city, even though you’re still in the heart of it. To top it all off, there’s no entry fee.

Wind Back the Clock

For those who love to explore an old castle, El Castillo Museo y Jardines is the place to be in Medellin. Built in 1930, it has been converted into a museum of family belongings of the former, loaded owner, all surrounded by French-style gardens. You could also explore some of the many churches that you’ll find downtown such as Catedral Metropolitana overlooking Parque de Bolivar, which dates back to 1875.

Shopping

Be prepared to be bombarded by vendors while you’re shopping. For a taste of the local markets where you’ll be bombarded by vendors as you pass by, a great place to shop is El Hueco. You'll have to put your haggling skills to the test, though. To skip on the cultural experience, try El Tesoro, the largest commercial center in the area with amazing views overlooking the city.

Gettin’ Jiggy

Colombia just wouldn’t be a Latin American country without a great party culture. You’ll find that party culture around Parque Lleras in El Poblado, an area that is also known as the Zona Rosa. This area draws “the young, the beautiful, the rich, the surgically augmented and the merely enthusiastic” as described by Lonely Planet who rank this area as the No. 1 district for entertainment in all of Colombia. Here you can have a drink on one of the many outdoor patios or dance the night away in any of the huge selection of clubs.

Eating

The most common plate in a typical Colombian restaurant is called “Bandeja Paisa.” It's known for its oversized amount, and vast combination, of foods such as rice, red beans, grounded dry meat, sweet plantain, chorizo, morcilla, deep fried pork skin, avocado, all wrapped in a tortilla with a fried egg on top. El Hato Viejo is the perfect place to sample some local cuisine. According to Fodor’s you should try the sopa de guineo (plantain soup) before sinking your teeth into lomito (tenderloin) or langostinos (lobsters). Finish your feast with brevas con queso (figs with white cheese), all while sitting among the overflowing plants on the second-story balcony.

Day Trip: Piedra de Penol/Guatape

This gigantic rock that explodes from the landscape of a little town called Guatape, Antioquia is great for a day trip. It is approximately one to two hours from Medellin. You don’t need to be a veteran rock-climber, because over 700 cement stairs have been built into the side of the cliff, allowing you to climb “with ease” to enjoy the stunning view of the surrounding lakes and towns. When you've reached the top, you can even pick up a snack and a drink in the shop to recover from your climb! Once you’re done with the climb, you can spend the rest of your day exploring the cobblestone streets lined with vividly colored houses in the beautiful village of Guatape.

Phil Galfond

With PokerStars’ WCOOP in the rearview mirror, the spotlight shifts back to the high-stakes cash games that really took off in the month September. In fact, depending on the last few days of the month, both Ilari “Ilari FIN” Sahamies and Rafi “refaelamit” Amit could book over $1 million in winnings for the month. That number wasn’t all that impressive a year or two ago, but it's certainly something to brag about after Black Friday.

The biggest winner this week ended up being Brian “$tinger 88” Hastings who booked a nice $365,874 win in just 5,054 hands spread across 49 sessions. Right behind him was “socutiesf” with $350,150 in winnings over 224 sessions (23,083 hands). Rounding out the top four was Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond ($292,754 in 150 sessions/17,891 hands) and Amit ($251,095 in 91 sessions/6,982 hands).

On the flip side, Andreas “Skjervøy” Torbergsen and Sahamies ended up the biggest losers, with the former dropping $235,868 in 4,219 hands spread across 51 sessions. Meanwhile, Sahamies hurt his chances of finishing the month with $1,000,000+ by losing $196,660 in 58 sessions of 5,970 hands.

Galfond & Company Getting Busy

On Monday, Galfond was busy grinding the $50/$100 6-max pot-limit Omaha tables and put in 8,000 hands. He played for 12 hours against the likes of Sahamies, Amit, Gavin “gavz101” Cochrane, Rob “Vaga_Lion” Akery, Torbergsen, Hastings, and Jens “Jeans89” Kyllönen, just to name a few. In the end, he emerged as the biggest winner of the day with $153,000 in profit.

Surprisingly, Galfond wasn’t involved in the biggest hands of the day, which you can see below:

“mTw-DaviN” Snags a $111,000 Pot

Davin “mTw-DaviN” Georgi didn't fare too well at the tables on Monday. However, despite finishing in the red, Georgi did take down the biggest pot of the day at a five-handed $50/$100 PLO table that saw “Bucketned” ($53,937) raise to $300 under the gun. Jens “Jeans89” Kyllönen ($9,275), who was next to act in the cutoff, then made it $1,150 to go, and Georgi ($90,378) opted to four-bet to $3,950 from the small blind. The other two players made the call and they were three-handed to the {4-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts} flop.

Georgi led out with a modest bet of $2,650, which Bucketned raised to $19,998. After Kyllönen got out of the way, Georgi three-bet to $72,042, and Bucketned called off his remaining $29,989.

Showdown
Georgi: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Bucketned: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

Both players had flopped a flush draw, but Georgi’s was superior. Bucketned’s best hope to win was to catch his open-ended straight draw, but the {2-Hearts} turn blanked and the {2-Clubs} river gave his opponent the nut flush. While he went on to lose, the $111,982 pot likely eased Georgi’s pain.

One for Sahamies

Like the aforementioned Davin “mTw-DaviN” Georgi, everybody’s favorite high-stakes Finn, Sahamies, managed to lose in the game, but not before taking down a big pot. The hand in question began when Torbergsen ($57,890.19) raised to $250 under the gun, which was called by both “EireAbu” and “!POkrparty?”. When action reached Sahamies in the small blind, he exercised his option with a three-bet to $1,450. Both Torbergsen and the other two limpers called, and it was four-way action to the {4-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{K-Clubs} flop.

Sahamies was first to act and checked, opening the door for Torbergsen to bet $3,903. Action folded back to Sahamies and he made the call, followed by a check on the {7-Hearts} turn. Torbergsen wasted little time in betting $13,804, and Sahamies responded with a check-raise all-in for $40,657.50. Torbergsen made the call and showed {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} for top two pair, but it was no good against the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} set of Sahamies. The {9-Spades} river changed nothing, and Sahamies took down a pot worth $95,061.

Welcome Back, Harrington10!

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Jared “Harrington10” Bleznick at the high-stakes tables — pre-Black Friday in fact — but that all changed this week when he made an appearance on PokerStars. According to the site, Bleznick has relocated to Mexico, making him just another poker player who has relocated to continue playing online.

While his weekly results weren’t anything special, he did mix it up at the $50/$100 PLO tables on Tuesday. In one of his more notable hands, Bleznick ($39,594.50) was playing heads up against “terryhsu” ($10,198.75) when the latter raised to $300 on the button. Bleznick responded with a three-bet to $900, terryhsu called, and the flop came down {10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}. Bleznick immediately led out for $899.75, terryhsu called, and the {K-Hearts} appeared on the turn, which both players checked.

When the {7-Diamonds} peeled off on the river, Bleznick checked and terryhsu bet $1,799.50. At that point, Bleznick woke up with a check-raise to $8,997.50 and terryhsu called all-in for his remaining $6,599.50 with his {9-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{2-Clubs} flush. Unfortunately for him, Bleznick held a higher flush with {K-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Spades} to take down the $20,397.50 pot.

Who's Up? Who's Down?

Week’s biggest winners (9/23-9/29): Brian “$tinger 88” Hastings (+$365,874), socutiesf (+$350,150), Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond (+$292,754), Rafi “refaelamit” Amit (+$251,095)

Week’s biggest losers: Andreas “Skjervøy” Torbergsen (-$235,868), Ilari “Ilari FIN” Sahamies (-$196,660), !P0krparty¡ (-$192,618)

Year-to-date winners: *Gus Hansen (+$3,941,000), *Daniel “jungleman12” Cates (+$1,952,000), *Alexey “NoPasaran” Makarov (+$1,875,000), Rafi “refaelamit” Amit (+$1,814,000), *Matt Hawrilenko (+$1,440,000), *bixiu (+$1,406,000), *Phil Ivey (+$1,336,000), Andreas “Skjervøy” Torbergsen ($1,283,000)
