The PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Chile continued on Friday at the Enjoy Casino & Resort in Vina del Mar as the surviving 188 players from Days 1a and 1b combined for Day 2 action. After eight levels of play, that field was whittled down to 32 players, and Daniela Horno was leading the way.
With a prize pool of $651,840 at stake, including a $129,470 first-place prize, the players were intent on making the money, meaning they needed to finish in the top 104. The early levels of action put an end to any money dreams Carlos Perez, Juan Carlos, Odilon Machuca and Leandro Csome may have had, because they were all sent to the rail empty handed.
LAPT Season 4 Player of the Year Pablo Gonzalez, also failed to reach the money. His elimination came when he moved all in for 25,400 from the cutoff after the player in the hijack had raised to 4,800. The button got out of the way, and the small blind made the call. After the hijack folded, Gonzalez tabled , but was behind the of the small blind.
Gonzalez was in a bad spot, though the appeared in the window; unfortunately for him, it was followed by the and . It was a set-over-set flop, meaning Gonzalez needed the last five in the deck to stay alive. The turn was not it, and neither was the . Gonzalez was eliminated from the Main Event without a cash.
After Claudio Scandura finished as the unfortunate bubble boy and the players reached the money, the eliminations came fast. Brent Sheirbon was one of the first to hit the rail post-money bubble. It happened when he moved all in under the gun for his last 26,000. One by one his opponents folded around to the player in the big blind, who announced a call.
Showdown
Sheirbon opted to put it all in with the suited one-gappers, and it appeared to pay off when the flop came down . Unfortunately for Sheirbon, his hope would be short lived as the dealer burned and turned the . The river changed nothing, and Sheirbon shook hands with his opponent before making his way to the payout desk in 95th place for $1,550.
Other players following Sheirbon out the door included Juan Amigo (90th - $1,550), Guillermo Pardo (64th - $2,030), Claudio Lopez (57th - $2,030) and Thiago “XTheDecanoX” Nishijima (55th - $2,180).
Daniela Horno finished sixth in the LAPT Chile Main Event last year, and is positioning herself for a deep run this year. On Day 2, a big hand developed when action folded to an unknown player in the cutoff, who put in a raise to 16,000. The player on the button then moved all in for 147,000, and Horno moved all in over the top from the small blind for around 160,000.
After the player in the cutoff got out of the way, Horno rolled over and her opponent stood up and flipped over the inferior . The flop was about as unexciting as they come, and the turn left the player on the button drawing dead. The on the river improved Horno to a full house and she took down the healthy pot, chipping up to 320,000 in the process.
As if that wasn’t enough, a couple of hours later, action folded to Horno on the button and she opened for 25,000 in what would turn out to be the last hand of the night. Ryan O'Donnell was in the small blind and moved all in for around 160,000, and Horno made the call.
Showdown
O'Donnell was in big trouble and in desperate need of some help, which he found on the flop. Suddenly Horno needed a king to eliminate her opponent, and while she didn't catch it on the turn, she did on the river when the spiked. The railbirds reacted sharply as O'Donnell simply shook his head in disbelief. He was eliminated in 33rd place for $2,610, and Horno bagged up 767,000 and ended as the Day 2 chip leader.
