We just got word that the WSOP is going to stage three heads-up matches, re-enacting three legendary Main Event heads-up matches.
The first two matches are locked in, details below, but for the third the WSOP is asking for our votes to decide which historical battle will be relived.
It's all going down on June 2 in Las Vegas and we'll be there to bring you the action. Read on for more information, and how you can cast your vote.
Match 1: Farha vs. Moneymaker
The first match represents the most influential heads-up victory in the history of poker: Chris Moneymaker's 2003 upset of living legend Sammy Farha.
This will be a best two-out-of-three affair with the following provisions.
- First match: Exact starting chips they had when they started heads up play in 2003. (Moneymaker: 5,490,000; Farha: 2,900,000)
- Second match: Reverse starting stacks.
- *Third Match: Even starting stacks. (*if necessary)
Match 2: Chan vs. Hellmuth
In 1989 Johnny Chan had a chance to do the impossible, a three-peat in the WSOP Main Event. It was not to be, however, and his loss unleashed a curse that follows the poker world to this day: Phil Helluth.
Hellmuth became the youngest Main Event winner in history and solidified (at least in his own mind) him as the greatest poker player on the planet.
Chan will have a one-match shot at redemption. Both players will start with even stacks.
Match 3: You Decide
The third and final match will be decided by our votes. Go to the WSOP Facebook page and pick from the following pairings:
1988 WSOP Main Event: Johnny Chan vs. Erik Seidel
2004 WSOP Main Event: Greg Raymer vs. David Williams
2006 WSOP Main Event: Jamie Gold vs. Paul Wasicka
2010 WSOP Main Event: Jonathan Duhamel vs. John Racener
No word on what, if any, the prizes will be besides bragging rights and TV time for all involved.
PokerListings.com will be in Vegas for the whole WSOP so tune in to our WSOP 2011 Live Coverage page on June 2 for action from these matches!
All three matches will air on ESPN on July 26 in a two-hour special broadcast.
